Somebody's Gotta Buy This Piece!

I think part of it for me is the portrayed vibe of how exclusive everything is when I saw something I posted here from TRR end up there for sale....It's not that she doesn't have beautiful things because she does, I just don't like that aspect of the salesmanship personally. But it's obviously working for her!

I love the hustle but the real real flips do irk me. And I’m not an instagram shopper. Thankfully I realized this before I did too much damage. I like to see stones in person before committing. still, I follow all of the big names and look longingly at some of their goodies.

instagram is simply the worst shopping platform. I do not want to have to MESSAGE people.

One guy I bought from instagram from five years ago and he still messages me WEEKLY asking why I haven't bought from him again and it's like... please. I will buy from you next time I want to. I do not wish to "cultivate a relationship." I want to just buy things when I want to buy things and not buy things when I don't want to buy things. I don't need to talk about buying things with the person I am buying things from. I can talk about buying things here on PS with my bling buddies.

I agree with all of this and I am reminded of how we used to advocate so strongly in PS for price transparency and buyer protections and professional relationships with vendors and IG is just the opposite of all that.

Not an antique but versatile band on sale for 50%off: 18k yg, 6.25, $337.5

I’m so tempted to buy this, but I must be good.
Hopefully someone will get this it’s so rare and a good price.

That’s such a cute piece.

It is, it’s been on my wishlist for a while but alas, I may have done something impulsively, as things were looking grim. Haha
They are to hard find intact, and usually $1k or more.

I agree. Once I see "message for price" I go no further. If they can't post the price, why? Does it depend who is asking? Sorry. Not for me.

I have seen sellers try to explain reasons for this, but at the end of the day, it makes the experience stressful for me, and I since this destroys any joy I have in the process, I stop there as well!

Can you say what some of their reasons were?

The stated reasons are that the need to keep it secret because other sellers will see their listing and then offer the same thing or similar for just slightly lower, or message their potential buyers with slightly better prices.

These are some of my additional ideas, no one has told me this:
1) Price may be flexible over time, either up (price of gold goes up, etc) or down (price of diamonds goes down, or little interest/no sale), and they don't want to mark the price down in the post to make it seem like it isn't that in demand, or that it was priced too high to begin with. I suspect also that some (certainly not all) of the "Item available again, buyer had an emergency etc" are items that never sold at all and need to generate new interest.
2) They may be testing out interest at a certain price point and if everyone is passing when they hear the price, the price may be adjusted downward.
3) The price may be negotiable based on some factors; some may be legit like if a person needs a payment plan or not. Sometimes they will also list some additional flaws or unknowns about the piece in the DMs and if the buyer is ok with that then they will sell it for a bit lower "as it". Dealers and people in the jewelry industry typically get a lower price, from what I understand.
4) Bigger sellers may do it in order to have contact info for future clients. Say the person passes on the item when they hear the price, but they tell the seller, "Let me know if you get something similar for $xxx range", or maybe the seller will get something similar at a lower price and send DMs to the people who were interested in the previous item but looking for a more budget friendly price range.

Along with the previous suggested reasons -
I know I’ve mentioned this before and don’t have the screenshots to prove it, unfortunately

But years ago it was a ‘I can’t list the price or I have to spell it out it in a weird way because IG algorithm will do something to my posts so my sellers don’t get to see them -
And then it was I think it was even related to taxes? As in proof of selling - I can’t remember exactly what.

I also remember it being said the estate jewelry community is pretty incestious and the general public doesn’t want to know that. As it’s related to the markups.

Oh. And I think it creates more FOMO & exclusivity & impulse buying.

That's funny. I do see many of them who post their prices. Their posts come up.
And I don't really want to help people avoid taxes if they are due. So I'll stick to my choice of not buying from folks who don't list prices.

This is so exquisite

@LightBright Gorgeous! It's funny they have a GIA report for the pearl and didn't get one for the sapphires and/or diamonds. I'm always worried that antique pieces are paste or synthetic. (Not that these are, but I always feel better with a cert.)

Anyhow, I was thinking Sri Lanka, but then decided to do a little research and confused myself. :lol-2:

Anyhow, I've always like this article from Lotus, even though it makes me drool.

Yes, I noticed that too. I once saw GildedLane comment on the rarity of natural pearls, so the cert proves that. I don’t doubt the diamonds but the blue of those sapphires are either color corrected or really vibrant. I’m guessing Burmese, which was typical of that time period. Thank you for the article!

Please tell us what kind of sapphires you think these are... Burmese? Vietnamese? They are so vibrant and stunning.

Well, crap. That's another site I didn't need to know existed. :lol-2:

How is the returns process with Pawn America? The website says customer pays return shipping - do they provide a label and if so how much is it usually?

Hey there! I recently returned a ring to them. You have to contact them for a return authorization, then you’re on your own to ship it back to the address they provide. I used the cheapest and slowest FedEx, but they refunded me the day they got it and didn’t give me any hassle.
