Somebody's Gotta Buy This Piece!

Yeah, no. I also have to assume they are lab.

I just saw an implausible but gorgeous pair of super white high domed cushion cut, large, Edwardian style earrings on a reputable dealer’s site.

We weren’t seeing this abundance of luxurious antique diamonds in the old days before consumers with money, cared. It is ALL very sketchy to me and I’m assuming a good percentage of “antique” pieces are very solid replicas.

I would like to know what the GIA reports say. Listing claims “natural” not synthetic.

does it look like the girdles are frosted? Some pics it does kind of look that way- but I wouldn’t bet any money on it. I can’t pull up those GIA report numbers to see if it’s noted.

It’s hard to tell but I think modern cutters can also leave a girdle unfaceted? What would that look like….

I wouldn't have assumed that they are lab at all, so I looked up one of the certs in the second link.

Here's one from the first link

But the word “contemporary” might refer to the mountings only, or the diamonds and the mountings. I think sellers should be crystal clear about the diamond being antique or modern replicas. These listings are unclear on that point IMO because “contemporary” could refer to the mounting, the diamonds, or both.

I agree, it could mean either. I don't think it is clear at all.

I'm not sure I'm following your concern. It specifically says contemporary, there is no suggestion that they are antique settings or stones. The low color and GIA certs would verify that they are natural diamonds, and the description "contemporary" indicates that they are newly cut. No different from August Vintage natural diamonds. I don't see an issue here, am I missing your point?

The vendor is not as clear as they should be. For inexperienced people, “contemporary old mine cut earrings” might mean the settings are contemporary but the stones are antique old mine cut (as is the case for many modern made settings with antique diamonds). “this timeless duo blends antique charm with modern craftsmanship.” Where’s the “antique” anywhere?

Then when you look at the GIA cert you see the cut is classified as “cushion brilliant”. My antique Transitional is classified by GIA as “circular brilliant”. It’s not that clear, and we see this a lot where stones are not labeled as contemporary by GIA.

I didn’t see they had GIA certs when I alleged they might be lab. But I find matched cut large size natural diamonds, an obvious pair, to be really indicative of the demand for real antiques. Modern cutters are creating natural diamond, matched sets, of antique styles (actually neither cut looks antique, imo).

With August Vintage diamonds they never use a cut term that’s used for antiques, like “old mine cut”. They say August Vintage European Cut or August Vintage Cushion Brilliant (this branded cut resembles what the vendor above calls old mine cut while its pertinent GIA report says “cushion brilliant”).

Just some examples of where the vendor is unclear. And look at the prices, for low color diamonds, which they call “white/colorless”.

That makes sense. It seemed pretty clear to me, but I can see how there can be confusion.

I saw this and patted myself on the back for recently getting my 1.49 J SI1 OEC and 1.61 J SI1 transitional for under $5000 and $4000, respectively. When I saw this one I mentioned to my boyfriend that there was a stone with the same specs as mine for $6400, and he gave me some weird looks until I realized he misunderstood me - he thought I was showing him because I wanted to buy that one too. :lol-2:

Hahaha tell him you are much more savvy than that and if you got your rings appraised it would be worth x amount more than you paid! I always find comparisons for my hubby to justify my purchases lol.

Oh he knows! And he was very supportive of me keeping both stones. Our finances are separate and I'm a big girl, so that's not really a concern. Which is why he didn't actually say anything so it took me a while to realize that he was misunderstanding and thought I wanted to buy the third one. Lol!

Somebody please, please, PLEASE buy this bracelet from Langs and put me out of my misery. I want this so much, lol but am definitely on a bling ban for now after my bracelet and earrings. Big sigh..................
