soi have been stalking this emerald cut vintage halo. It is being offered at 4500. It comes with an appraisal from a very reputable appraiser. He states it is an L I1. I just love how glamorous I feel when I wear it. image_3007.jpg image_3006.jpg
Please tell me it's a bad idea to buy it!

Would strongly advise against an I1 in an EC!

If the inclusion (I can see it from here in the photos) doesn't bother you, the color doesn't bother you, and the appraisal assures there are no structural issues with the stone, then if it makes you happy why not?

I know "mind clean" is a big thing here that comes out of ordering stuff sight unseen off the paper online, but if you're holding it in your hands and you like it and you think it's worth the price, what does what the piece of paper says really matter? There are no "rules" in jewelry.

I forgotto add that part of the appeal is that it is estimated at almost carats for the center stone!!! I will never ever be able to buy a 3 carat diamond again since my ering is a 2.20. it measures 8.67 by 6.67 by 5.60.

I think it's a beautiful ring! I like rings that make a statement lol - my thinking is along the lines of kb1gra, you've had a chance to see this upclose and personal, and if you're ok with the clarity and color and you will wear it often and get a lot of joy out of it, I don't see why you shouldn't get it. What is the carat weight and metal of the ring? It seems like a fair price to me, just based on looking at lots of rings on various sites. Maybe try to negotiate a bit on the price? Can't hurt to ask.

eta, just saw your update but you left out the number lol! sounds like it's close to 3 carats? I tend to be a bit more laid-back than the average PS'er, but in my opinion this seems like a sweet deal, a big look for a relatively small price tag.

If you've seen it in person (which it seems you have) go for it! That's a large diamond for the money that makes you happy, why not?

The highlighted part says a lot!

To me, it seems like a reasonable price for what you'd be getting. My questions would be - how often would I wear it? And is that worth $4500 to me? (BTW I think that would be mostly a special occasion ring for me, although I know many women could and would rock it as an everyday ring, or even as a slumming-around-in-jeans weekend ring. I'll add that when I first got my 3-stone ring it seemed awfully blingy and I thought I'd be wearing it only occasionally, but I now wear it almost every day!)

It faces up very small for three carats probably due to the depth. I think it should be 7x9mm+ at 3 cts. So think of it being more like a 2+ ct stone because that is the size it is facing up.

Examples:

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/3.02-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-sku-326562 (7x9)

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/3.07-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-sku-366866 (7.4x9.7)

Here's a 2.35 K at 6.89 x 8.8 so still larger than the one you are looking at.

I will tell you that although the price is tempting, I would rather wait and pay more for a stone like the K stone I just posted since it is larger, cleaner, maybe better cut, and a color grade higher. I could not buy an I1 in a step cut stone.

If you love it and have the extra money, I say go for it! When are you EVER going to find a 2+ct diamond for less than $5k again? Sure, it's not perfect, but neither are we, if it makes your heart sing, wear it loud and proud! Everyone has their own preferences, but they should not deter you from sticking true to your own. If you feel like you'll regret passing this by, then don't.

I'm in the camp that if you love it, can afford it, and feel the price is reasonable, go for it.

I know I can drive myself crazy searching for the "best" deals... but IMO there is also real value in finding something you love. For me, those pieces are few and far between. Sounds like this is one of those for you.

Let us know what you decide!

Hi if you do not go for it please let me know who is selling and I will I think I can live with that huge imperfection as long as it doesn't compromise the stones integrity

But if you love it... Buy it.

What a shame that this person took an authentic 1930s platinum tiffany ring with family heritage and reshanked it with 14k yellow gold. It's worth much, much less than that $15,000 appraisal claims due to that alone.

I'm guessing she never had any intention of selling or just didn't realize the "value" factor.

Well, that $15,000 appraisal is inflated but not because of any claimed Tiffany provenance; Tiffany is not mentioned in the appraisal. The seller, who isn't touting it as an authentic vintage Tiffany, notes that although her husband's family believes that's where the ring was purchased, there is no documentation of that. (60+ years later, when her future husband took the ring to Tiffany for reshanking, the shank was so worn that no stamp was legible. Seems Tiffany was unable to ascertain to their satisfaction that it was one of their rings from bygone days, for Tiffany was not who ended up doing the 1997 reshanking.)

nala, from what you've written, it certainly sounds as if this ring has grabbed your heart, you are comfortable with the price (which is far from unreasonable), and will seriously regret not making it yours. That's a winning combination of factors imo :))

You are correct Molly and exactly why she's asking $5,000 and accepting offers... Retail is $4800-$5,000 so she will likely have to take less to sell. I shouldn't haves posted it. Sorry Nala to thread jack just one of the many things I was watching on ebay.
