Some setting guidance - help me stop pestering the jeweller!

Hi All,

After bugging the jeweller so much he told me to settle down   I thought it might be wise to come on and ask questions here instead! I have a diamond set aside that I'm not 100% sure on as I don't actually know what I'm doing - I only have theoretical knowledge based on what I've read, but the jeweller assures me that it is a beauty. He's a PS vendor and has had some great reviews, here and elsewhere, so I am inclined to trust him.

I have setting questions though. I lost my original engagement ring a few years ago and have just been wearing my plain wedding band. I had a v small solitaire bezel set princess cut but I don't want the same thing. The one good thing about it though is that it was very secure and I didn't have too much worry about damaging it.

I have been looking at the following setting:
http://www.eternitybyyoni.com/engagement-rings/diamond-engagement-ring/Kate-Ring-with-Crown-Basket-540.htm

I love the basket and I wear yellow gold so would take the yellow gold option. I've never been a channel setting kind of person, although I think they can look lovely, but it is probably what I would change about the ring. The jeweller is open to changing it to a pave setting but it would make the band 1.8mm in width with the current stones (keeping in the current price range). I'm just not sure on the structural durability of a 1.8mm pave setting? It would have a 1.15 ct round diamond.

As an alternative, I also really like this, with a six prong head instead of four prong:

It seems a bit more substantial to me with a 2mm band, though I don't know if that makes a difference! I don't like the second vendors return policy or warranty so I wouldn't choose them to make the setting.

I am not someone who would put the ring in a box for special occasions only, I wear (wore) my rings every day within reason. Usually taking them off for exercise, gardening, cleaning etc. But other than that I wear them. I also have two small children so I'm not always worrying about being careful with my hands.

So after a rambling post, I guess my questions are - do you think that the first setting with a 1.8mm pave band would suit the way I use my jewellery? Do you think that the second setting would be better if I could see if the vendor I'm using would work with me on it?

Apologies, I'm a bit lost with it and the jeweller, while always professional and lovely, thinks I should stop obsessing and just let him get the initial design concept over to me. I know that he's right, doesn't stop me from thinking about it though :D.

Thank you!

I think either style seems like it would suit you. Personally, I really like the 1st ring the best. It's very pretty & has a number of details that are more refined looking than the 2nd ring (IMO only of course). I had a ring very similar in design to #2, & I recently got the eternity band caught on a door handle & now its an oval shaped band. The stones stayed in place, but a bit more pressure & the ring would have snapped. With the recessed bead setting of the 1st one, they seem a bit more secure in their channel. However, the 1st ring shank & overall appearance doesnt look as hefty as the 2nd one. Beef up the 1st ring (shank depth & overall thickness), & keep the rest of the design, voila..nice ring.

I can completely understand your anxiety over a custom piece. Just make sure he is making a cast of it or provides you with progress pictures so that if there is a red flag, or something that causes you distress, they can put the breaks on it until its resolved. ;))

All the best..
=)

Victor Canera made a Jocelyn with a scalloped basket for me. It has a bead set 1.9ish shank and the stone is about 8.7 mm. I wear it everyday, even sleeping, except for working out. It is platinum, btw. So I think 1.8mm is probably ok. And I like the first setting.

Hi both, thank you very much for your kind replies.

ccuheartnurse, I think that the option of beefing up ring #1 is a really good solution, I hadn't thought about that. I really like the detail in the first ring also - I think I'm getting to the point of looking at too many! I'm sorry to hear about the ring.

LLJsmum, thank you for your thoughts also, the Jocelyn is a lovely setting. It sounds like it will be very similar, and that's pretty much how I treat my jewellery also.

There are so many variations available along the same lines that I have confused myself. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what the jeweller comes back with image-wise, I'm not good at waiting! :D
