We recently purchased a loose diamond through blue nile (1.14 ct round) and had our hearts (no pun intended) set on the hearts on fire simply bridal twist setting:
http://www.heartsonfire.com/shop-jewelry/rings/engagement-rings/simplybridaltwistsolitaire.aspx

As it turns out, hearts on fire doesn't have the setting needed for our size carat (or my small sized finger) in stock and they are not willing to make a setting for us since we are not using a HoF diamond.

I'm trying to find an alternative and hoping I can stumble upon another solitaire setting that is similar. I love the twist of the band and the fact that the HoF setting is both classic & unique. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thank you!

Thank you for the recommendations! I will definitely check those out. Does anybody have any other suggestions for unique yet classic solitaires for a round stone?

I'd recommend looking through Vatche rings. They are classic, excellent quality, and some are a little different than the plain solitaires.

That setting is awesome. Off the top of my head I have not seen something exactly like that. Sholdt has something similar but it is more modern and less romantic: http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/sholdt-jewelry/rings/01ZZ1/

You could have a similar design custom made by a good bench who uses CAD. Most PS vendors could do it well.

ETA: I started this post before other's replied!

I like Vatche as well, but they are pricey. Ritani is more reasonably priced for solitaires, and they have many beautful ones.

Dreamer D, I think I'm a little clueless and not sure what you mean by "a good bench" or how I determine that? Also, what is a "PS vendor"? Again, sorry if these are really dumb questions. We live close to NYC and were considering having a similar setting custom made at one of the jewelers in the diamond district, but they all seem rather unreliable and shady. Not sure I feel confident that the ring they make for me would actually contain MY stone or that they'd even use full platinum if that's the metal I ordered. Am I being overly paranoid? Thank you again.

Diamond District...go see Mark at Engagement Rings Direct. He makes great custom settings (and has lovely designs on the site) at prices that are better than some of the big name designers. Many positive references here on this forum. Here is his site. He has beautiful engagement rings and can make a custom design as well.

I would definitely not recommend going to a random jeweler on 47th St. or you could get into big trouble!

(A PriceScope vendor is one that advertises here and as a result, they have a lot of examples of their work posted here. A side bonus is that the good and bad is posted, so they try very hard to please their customers. It is a win-win for everyone, most of the time! By a good bench, she meant the actual craftsman who makes the ring.)

Re: solitaire setting similar to Hearts on Fire Simply Brida

Thanks for the clarification! Is there a place on PS where I could see a list of the PS vendors?

Thanks!

Re: solitaire setting similar to Hearts on Fire Simply Brida

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. Really appreciate the help! We were able to find 1 jeweler who said they would sell us the HoF setting and mount our stone into it, but I'm a little wary because they want to use a 1.5ct, 6 ring size finger setting for our 1.14ct, 4.75 ring size. This jeweler says that it'll be better to resize the 1.5ct, 6 ring since that's what HoF already has in stock instead of asking HoF to custom make one, but I'm a little hesitant that the final product will look as good (or hold my diamond as securely). Any thoughts on this? I've also talked to a few jewelers who can custom make the ring we like, but I'm hesitant about that too because am afraid that even if they show me the CAD and the wax model that the final product won't look as good as the HoF original. Does anybody have any experience with "copying" HoF settings this way?

Thanks you again, PS community.

Please do not let the jeweler do this. Your ring need to be created to the specs of your diamond. A setting for a 1.5 will be too big and could cause future headaches. I also probably not trust them to copy the HOF setting either.

Did you not like some of the other examples posted in this thread? The sholdt is one of the most beautiful settings and the quality is second to none. Pearlmans is offering 20% off gift cards you can use towards the purchase to boot. They can even send you the setting to view in person if you don't have a Sholdt dealer near you. It comes with a matching wedding band too, which you could get without the milgrain.

There are excellent custom jewelers but none will probably look exactly like the HOF, it will be illegal for them to copy it exactly even if it's possible. The curves and twist of that setting are so important to how it's going to look that I really do think you may be better off going with a designer that you can see ahead of time so you know exactly what you are getting, like the Sholdt, Ritani, or Vatche.

I like the front view of this one: http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/sholdt-jewelry/rings/16ZZ1/
but I'm afraid the side view will look like this: http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/sholdt-jewelry/rings/01ZZ1/ which I find a bit too bulky/rugged for my taste. I would prefer something with a more feminine/romantic looking side view. I will call Scholdt to find out if the side views are the same in both rings.

I did like some of the Gabriel & Co suggestions and am awaiting a call back from them to find out about stores in my area.

Do you have any particular recommendations for excellent custom designers (who perhaps are also somewhat affordable)?

Re: solitaire setting similar to Hearts on Fire Simply Brida

I would try to see the Sholdt in person if you can. Many times rings just look so different and are much more dainty and delicate than you think.

as for custom, Mark T at engagementringsdirect does very good custom work and is priced reasonably. Brian Gavin also does beautiful work. http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/ Victor Canera does immaculate hand forged work but will come with a higher pricetag.

Bridget Durnell is another designer that comes to mind. You can see examples of her work on Pearlmans site but she does custom as well. Lots of her designs have the twisy metal (with pave) but I'm sure she could make it plain and I would trust her artistic ability to get the curves and lines right and keep it feminine.

Re: solitaire setting similar to Hearts on Fire Simply Brida

Update: found another jeweler that says they CAN sell just the HoF setting for us and mount our diamond into it. The only thing I'm speculating, though, is whether it's a good idea to order a 1.25 ct setting for our 1.14 stone. The jeweler assured me that the final product would look good and that the prongs would tightly hug our diamond. He said that if we go with the 1 ct setting, the diamond will look too high. Does anybody have any experience with this type of situation?
