This question is twofold so please bear with me. I'm having some trouble selecting a setting for a 2 carat solitaire. I want a platinum Tiffany style setting, but I'm unsure if a 4-prong or 6-prong is best. I stopped by a local jewelry store today and the woman suggested a 4 prong setting to avoid it looking too "metal heavy." However, I see many 6-prong settings on here and don't feel that way at all. That said, I know some of this has to do with the prong size/shape. What she showed me was from Stuller and was priced higher (around $700 more) than a setting on James Allen that looked nearly identical. All that said, are there any other sites I should be looking at? If I purchase a setting for a 2 ct diamond, can that accommodate up to a 2.3 ct?

Onto my other question.. I recently purchased a 2.03 RB but I'm already having DSS about it. I tried on a 2 carat the jeweler had in house and it felt so small. I can't explain it, but something felt off. I understand some diamonds can face up smaller than their actual weight which may be the case here. Should I order a larger size and compare the two or is the size difference so small I'll hardly notice? I entered the dimensions into diamdb.com which is helpful, but obviously not a substitution for the real thing. There's probably not a easy answer either way, but would love to hear your thoughts.

FWIW, this is my last and only upgrade so I need to get this right!

For the setting, the prongs (style, thickness, etc) will come down to personal preference.
And, depending on the setting style, it may be possible to have it tweaked/reworked to accommodate a larger diameter diamond, but also maybe not.

Can we assist you with finding a larger than 2 carat diamond and some settings (based on your inspiration/preference for design)?

@DejaWiz That's a kind offer, thank you! I would like to stay under 2.5 carats preferably slightly under so it doesn't feel overwhelming. I don't want it to draw too much attention, but a little is always appreciated. :) As far as settings go, I prefer a classic Tiffany style setting with a plain platinum band or a setting with pave diamonds on the band. For reference, my ring size is 4.25/4.5

I absolutely LOVE emeralds (in an ideal world I would want a 2.5 carat since they face up much smaller) but the good ones seem to be quite a bit more expensive than RB's of equal size. An emerald with tapered baguettes would be heavenly, but I prefer them to be somewhat substantial which is where the problem lies.

Sound like the makings of the perfect ring!
What budget cap would you comfortably like to stay under (so I don't go recommending diamonds that wouldn't work out)?

@DejaWiz I hope so! With regards to price point, I would ideally like to stay within the $2,000-$2,500 range if possible and maybe 2.3 (ish) max for a round.

I would absolutely love to see some emerald options if that's doable. I've found a few on my own, but the proportions have been slightly off and I'm not as familiar with fancy shapes. Oddly enough, they seem to be more expensive than rounds in the lab world. Thank you, again!
 
May I recommend ordering a CZ ring in order to determine the size/carat that you'd be interested in?
 
When you say "emeralds" do you mean emerald cut diamonds or do you actually mean emeralds (the green stone)?

And, if you want to entertain a bigger diamond just in case DSS may bite sooner rather than later:

Re the prongs, I prefer six because four makes a round diamond look a little square-ish. I don't think it's too much metal as long as the prongs aren't huge. Especially since the prongs aren't that noticeable anyway when they're in white metal against a clear diamond. It's just personal preference though.
 
I also prefer 6 prongs on a Tiffany setting.
Here is my 2.23 lab in a Ritani knife edge solitaire, if it helps? Also, agree with Seaurchin about the rounded on a six-prong vs square look to a four prong. I like tab prongs ( not everyone does). Sounds like their heavier solitaire is less expensive than the Stuller you mentioned.

@tyty333 - Apologies, that wasn't very clear. I'm interested in an emerald cut diamond.

I appreciate your input! I've heard 4-prongs can make a round looks square which I definitely don't want. Did you order your diamond and setting at the same time?

Your diamond is beautiful! Wow. I think I'm leaning towards 6-prongs like you and Seaurchin suggested. Thank you for bringing up tabs versus claws. That's another decision I'll need to make. With regards to the setting, the jeweler quoted $1450 for a 4-prong Tiffany setting in platinum and $1550 for a platinum setting with two tapered baguettes flanking the center stone. It seemed strange that the difference was so minimal given that the latter included the two baguettes. James Allen offers a plain platinum setting for $990.

I have an old cut diamond in a 4prong setting, which really makes the stone somewhat squarish, and a lab diamond in a 6prong setting. The setting is from David Klass, who I strongly recommend. I bought my setting in 14k WG for 950$. (I indicate the price for you only for comparisons sake)

Your ring is beautiful! I think I'm sold...6-prong it is! Thank you for sharing your experience, it's really helpful. Did you also purchase your stone from DK? Or did you have your stone set locally?
 
David Klass is in LA and lots of people on PriceScope have had him set stones and do custom settings. His prices are reasonable and he does a lot (I mean A LOT) better job than most jewelers “near you” can even attempt.

I’ve admired your ring so much! Im looking for a reset and want to go with this setting. Looks like your bands can sit almost flush. Is that right? Thank you

@DejaWiz - Quick question for you - is there any concern over the strain I'm seeing the "fire" video on the GCAL certification? I saw it in the initial video as well, but didn't think much of it before...

I think it's certainly worth assessing further... especially if the price is right. If it takes on a hazy or blurry appearance under certain lighting conditions, then get a refund and we find you some alternatives to pick from. :)

@DejaWiz - Thanks for your quick reply. I happened to stumble upon another option that's less expensive and larger with nearly identical specs and less graining. The only identifiable difference are the inclusions - clouds, feathers and crystals. The other I ordered only listed clouds.

@DejaWiz The indecision is annoying isn’t it? Do you think it’s worth it to cancel the other order (the 2.30 listed earlier) and purchase the 2.39 instead?

I think they'll perform very similar...I do think the 2.39 may have a bit cleaner CVD material, but hard to conclude without seeing them.
