Hello All…This is my first post here but have been perusing the forum for some time. I want to thank all of you as I’ve learned more from this forum than all other sites and resources combined.

With that said I have a question as to the position of the prongs in relation to the shank. I’m not exactly sure how to describe this so bear with me.

All 4 prong settings I’ve seen have the prongs set at 10,2, 4, and 7 o’clock. In shopping for rings my better half has found a setting with prongs set at 12,3, 6, and 9 o’clock (picture attached) that she really likes. I would like to know if there is a reason you don’t see settings like this often. Is it personal taste or is there a better reason behind it?

TIA

You don't see what we call NSEW 4 prong settings so much simply because of less request for them. Originally, when 4 prong settings were all made by hand the tradition only was for the regular placement. The alternative NSEW is no less satisfacory, but just not as traditional. I don't know of any difference in the choice for a more substantial reason. Maybe someone else may have a further suggestion as to why or why not.

your gf & mine has the same taste...

we saw a few of the previous 4 prong rings, but she doesn't like them... it's her preferance to have the prongs at NSEW positions... unfortunately i don't see much with the online vendors... :((

so i'm still looking for my setting...

I recall a post by someone (I think Garry?) saying that any damage to a stone typically occurs "side to side" and not "top to bottom" because of the way people generally move their hands, so perhaps the way your better half prefers may be safer than they way we usually see. That being said, I don't want to imply there is anything *unsafe* about the 10/2/4/8 placement, but this is something I remember reading a while back.

Dear god... the senility has finally set in at 41...

Garry (and others) did say this...and in a thread *I* started. Geez--you'd think I would have remembered it was my own damn topic!

Anyway, here is the thread:

HAHAHA...I feel your pain Dee*Jay as I'm not far behind you.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. When all is said and done I'm sure I'll end up getting what she wants anyway. Just needed to make sure there wasn't something drastically wrong with the arrangement.
