So Indecisive about my E-Ring! What would you do...

i knwo gemstone halos arent for you you said, though i think they are a great idea. But what about a double halo withj/k color malee and a yellow or pink or blue melee in the middle? The color would make the stones seem whiter.
i used this as an example elsewhere but similar to this

or this in reverse

Nielseel that is a great suggestion too. I like the idea of it - not sure if its for me. Again because of the colored stones.

Madelise, I would love to see pictures if you have them! Who made your ring?

Also - my boyfriend heard back from Mark. He said the contrast problem would be more from the metal than the side stones. I didn't think of that.

Then why not have it cast in yellow gold?? You'd have stones on the top so it'd be hardly noticeable and it'd just show on the bottom. That way you could get the lower color melee. Ask about it...

Lower coloured full-cut melee won't help w/ the contrast (it's not a stone body colour thing, it's a function of bigger and smaller stones having totally different types of light return). Ask about using single cuts, that should solve (or at least largely mitigate) that problem

i think it would be just amazing in a RG or YG, sense of course colored stones arent your cup of tell, which I TOTALLY get.

rosebloom, I've ogled that same ring myself so many times. LOVE IT!

I only have a photo of the melee in the setting, and a pic of the M next to the baby J/Ks. I'll post them when I am home later tonight

That SK is one of my favorites!

Thanks for the continued help and the pictures and links.

Single cuts seem like they would help and be a good solution for the melee but it doesn't solve the metal problem. I can't bring myself to favor the yellow gold look over white gold or platinum. So I'm pretty sure I'm running out of halo options for this stone.

This is such a hard decision.

Rose gold is becoming very popular right now and they look amazing with lower colored stones. What about doing only the halo in RG and the shank in WG? I'll try to find some photos for you..

I tried to keep the image larger so you can notice the tint more, but I mean, there isn't that much tint anyway :naughty: We aren't talking about FLY's.

Inside platinum. So any worries about the metal having a color contrast with lower colored melee… well, here's your example :)) I don't know if this helps you get more or less worried.

Wow Madelise thanks so much. I think that looks awesome! The center stome definitely matches the melee i think. Who did you say was making your ring for you?

SN Queens made my setting. I am localized in Los Angeles, and did not want to ship my ring out. When VC said he couldn't source me J/K single cuts, I was forced to search for another local jeweler that makes hand forged settings. SS was too pricey, and I remembered seeing Athenaworth post her grandmother's aquamarine set, so I drove there, and Sylva from SNQ had those J/K single cuts readily available to show me. I got my whole set with a WB, for less than the quote I got for VC's setting upgraded to single cuts. I still wanted to go with VC, but I really did not want G/H melee, which was the lowest color he can source in single cuts.

Just jumping in with a big fat 'ditto"!

Whoa I didn't even notice on my other screen. Why's it blue? Sorry about that, it must've been reflecting something or another. Weird. But they are perfectly matched soft whites.

Hmm well I do like the single cut idea. But I would prefer not to send my stone out to California (I'm in NY). Would have to find someone who could get the lower colored single cuts closer to me. I can't believe how much is going into this one ring!

Maybe it's already been mentioned but I wonder if Old World Diamonds could help you locate,or would have lower colored melee? They are doing their own custom work now and are located in NY.

Oh My gracielb! I just checked out your NYC thread & that stone is amazing!!! Please don't give up on it. Surely you can find a setting that will look perfect with that beauty. Have you considered an antique style setting? Talk to ERD, see what they can do.
Here is what I would choose if I owned that diamond, it's from Singlestone. Not a halo, but a perfect compliment to an antique cut warm cushion.

I had a similar setting done by Daniel M. Pics are here

Charmypoo is one of the pickiest PS'ers, and she endorses ERD and SK. If you don't care about it being hand forged, def reach out to ERD. I got a quote for a setting that was very reasonable. Their work looks spectacular.

Hi again,
Just wanted to post an update. We are thinking that the lower colored melee is not going to work for us. My boyfriend said he contacted a few ring designers (some that I found on PS) and they replied that they do not source lower colored melee and one said that they had not heard of K colored single cuts. The prices for sourcing full cut lower colored melee was out of our budget.

Soo back to square one. My boyfriend said that if the decision was up to him, he would keep the diamond and put it in a solitaire. But I'm not sure that's what I want to do. Same issue. We have until the 2nd week of Feb to decide.

Clarification: you do not necessarily need lower coloured single cut melee specifically, any decent single cuts will get the job done. The single cuts have fewer facets and present a solution for the difference in optics, not the difference in body colour. The difference in optics is by FAR the bigger concern when it comes to contrast between large lower-coloured center and halo stones that look like bright white dots - this old thread discusses exactly that: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/high-contrast-in-ideal-cut-diamonds-and-effect-on-appearance.144474/

Will the ring be cast? If so, and you aren't allergic to Ni, unplated wg may be your friend here - different compositions yield different colours, some very yellow and others just this side of white... you need something that's white enough to be mistaken for "white" unless say it's right beside platinum, but that's creamier than that platinum/palladium *icy white*... here's a thread with some pics of my own rings and also some pics from Mike at RDG when we were talking about gold colours last year (posted on PS with his permission): https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/unplated-white-gold.183102/#post-3331235?hilit=unplated#p3331235
If it'll be handforged you'll need to talk to Mark - some jewellers prefer not to handforge with white gold.

Does the color difference really bother you that much? I think H color melee would be fine, personally. I would not go with a solitaire if you've always dreamed of a halo. As someone who has gone through MANY settings, you won't really be able to fully enjoy your ring unless the setting is right.

The only other option is to return the diamond and buy a higher colored stone.

Yssie thanks for clarifying I actually didn't know that the color of the single cuts didn't matter. I went with k because of my stone and because of what Madelise used. Hmm gives me more to think about now.

Laila - yeah it does bother me :/ I wish it didn't. I really do. I don't think I will be going with a solitaire. If we return it we will definitely get a higher color, I am just sad about how much size I will lose ! Can't have it all I keep telling myself

Yes, but then you will be able to halo it, so it'll still look very large!

Personally, I would do one of three things (my fave being #1, my least fave being #3):

1. (What I would do): Keep it as a solitaire--in yellow or rose gold. (This will make the diamond appear more white in color). Personally, I think it is stunning on its own!
2. If you really want a halo, do it in 18K yellow gold with yellow diamond melee. That would make your K center diamond appear SO white!!! I really thing this would be stunning!
3. Do a halo in yellow gold (or rose gold, whatever you prefer) with white diamond melee. I had a J center diamond set in a white gold halo with white diamond melee and the contrast between the diamond colors bothered me SO much, that I finally just sold my ring and started all over again. I know, crazy, but the setting cost me so much money that I didn't think I could sell it without the GIA certified center diamond. I would not do this option. Regardless, it's still an option...and maybe YOU would like it! By what you're saying though, I think it would bother you too.

Good luck on your decision. The diamond is GORGEOUS! Whatever you decide to do, I think you should keep the diamond. :appl:
