finally after wandering the surface of this earth, I found the woman of my dreams.

We went and wandered a mall a few months ago, trying on various rings and she fell in love with a ring from Zales. Didn't want to give it back to the woman.

Looked wonderful on her and it's in my range for price. except then I got back and started educating myself and I realize that I can get a much better diamond for the money. I broached the subject when I found a similar setting at Blue Nile, but was met with some resistance. Mostly - the Zales one appeared softer for the finger than the more squared ones you would find on Blue Nile.

I contacted James Allen, who's rep said they would just modify their similar ring (also more blocky) and put baguettes on it.

It'd be like getting a Honda vs a Daewoo.

for the same price.

but In the back of my mind is the nagging feeling that she loves the Zales ring, and that would be that.

What do you all think? Is it possible to just buy a setting from Zales?

Its shinny, its the first diamond she see''s in a setting she likes. Now go get her a great diamond in that or a similar setting. Will Zales sell just the setting? Only one way for you to find out - ask them

Better yet, look through all of the PS vendors sites I am certain you will find something similar if not identical. Then get her a fantastic diamond from the vendor with your setting.

If you want to do this thing with her included then you BOTH need to sit down together and go through the PS Knowlege section and do some reading in the forums. If she is going to have "veto power" then her inclusion in the process has to be an "all or nothing" when it comes to this essential part. We see this quite often, if ONE of you gets educated on diamonds and the other is in love with a shiny piece of glass then you are headed for miserable disagreements.

Another approach might be to take her to a higher end store that carries Ideal/excellent Princess cuts and perhaps she will see a difference. The princess in that ring is in the yellow tint range and has inclusions visible to the naked eye. Does she know this?

In any case, just tread CAREFULLY when approaching the subject as these situations undoubtably test your communication skills with your SO.

It would definitely be doable for one of the online vendors to modify or create a similar setting, alternatively you might be able to purchase just the setting from Zales but it would be best to ask them if this were possible and if so, that the price was reasonable.

Me personally I would not want the setting from zales either since I would not trust them to set my diamond nor would I really want that quality in the sidestones etc.

I would order an AGS0 diamond from GOG or WF or High Performance Diamonds and then I would give them the photo and get the setting custome made.

If you do go this route, it is safer to buy the setting from zales and then have the vendor from whom you buy the diamond set it. The vendor who sells the diamond will take responsibility for the daimond during the setting process whereas Zales will not.

There are times when you should just get the setting the woman loves so that it is 'right', but I feel pretty confident that one of the ps vendors can make a version of this setting BETTER than the original. And that's just the setting to say nothing of the better diamond quality. Please, use this to inspire a custom ring purchase from james allen, wf, bgd, gog, wink's place, etc. This is the kind of setting that they can execute well and it will knock her socks off, with high quality side stones and center stone to boot.
