Yup, I found a ring on the sidewalk.

Its a RB 6 stone wb. It says 900plat and 100irid in the inside so im thinking its actual diamonds...

it was pretty dirty when I first found it so I tried to clean it as much as possible but its still pretty beat up. Needs a good polish.

I took some pics and was gonna post when I realized that I dont have the cord to hook up my camera here with me.

Will post as soon as I get home.

I should take it to get checked out!

craziness!

Maybe somebody got angry and said "we're through!" while throwing the ring! hmmm dunno.. I do feel bad that I have it tho... but what am i gonna do?

If i take it to the police, anybody can claim a ring... I know if I lost my ring I would be devastated
but then if i had left it just in case the people came back.. someone else im sure would have picked it up...

so i have a random ring for now... been practing taking pics on it so that when my actual ring comes I can be prepared!

Its not a very well made ring. It looks like a maul ring. Its U-prong but some of them seem to be bent a little. Maybe cuz its plat and it was kicked around before i picked it up?

You could always put a sign up where you found it that says ring found w/out details.

woops, I forgot to say I found it 2.5 years ago.

I left it in the lost and found that day, it was found in front of my work.

I thought since 2.5 years passed and no one claimed it, it would be ok to have it.

it is, isn''t it? im trying to clear my conscience...

I think in a group of 'normal' folks it would be fine to keep, enjoy or sell.

However this is a forum of jewellery obsessed nuts. We baby our rings and will project the loss of the unnamed owner of this ring onto ourselves and feel that you should have moved heaven and earth to find it's owner and should have found the owner and so now, you would not have the ring and would not be in this position as you would have already found the owner. So we would be thanking you for reuniting the ring with its owner 2.5 years ago.

Should have, could have, would have. IMHO, it is yours.

well I did try to find the owner actually when I first found it. I asked everybody that was inside my work and outside. And I tried to remember the people that came in that week, so that the next time they came in, I could ask them. Which I did.

I tooootally understand that if someone found my ring I would want them to TRACK ME DOWN. But also 2.5 years ago, I didnt have PS, and at the moment, I felt like I did everything I could. I asked around and since I live in a small down, maybe word would go around, because most of the time it does.

For a while I asked around because even tho I didn''t know a lot abot rings back then, its obvious that a ring is something very important. But its been in our lost and found for 2.5 years... Im gonna leave it in there of course in case that person suddenly realizes that its here.

I actually gave back a digital camera to a lady a year later and she was sooo overjoyed! it was sooo great! so im hoping that sombody comes and claims the ring.

In the mean time, I will go have it cleaned for them cuz its sure dirty. and practice my picture taking skills

It''s yours. You did your due dilligence.

Now where''s the pics?

Ok, I had to respond. Please don''t be hard on yourself. I think if you are an honest person it can be so hard to find things like this because part of you will always feel bad for the person who lost it. I consider myself to be almost too honest sometimes, and I could keep the ring in good conscience after the search you''ve done. After all, if it were my ring I would think that someone who tried to find the owner over a 2.5 year period would be more deserving of it than someone who waited out the 30 days or whatever in a police station. And I would be somewhat comforted that said person enjoyed the ring, cleaned it, took care of it, etc. These things all come around. One day you may lose something that another nice, honest person will enjoy!

My mom lost a .6ishct princess stud out of a pair of earrings I bought her while in an airport one Christmas holiday. It wasn''t insured and she was super disappointed. After not finding it, I kept hoping that someone needing an engagement ring who maybe couldn''t afford one found it. It was a pretty stone and I like to think it went to a good home.

Just say diamond ring found, and where, and the date, then wait for the owner to correctly describe it.

I JUST sent a xmas card with a note in it to the person we sold our last house to telling her I had lost my wb in that house - I enclosed an article I''d just read about someone finding a ring/owner after 37 years! I searched the house top to bottom, so I never mentioned it before, but the article prompted me to give a shout out to her ....................................

You should have turned it into the police. I mean, for all you you know someone's grandmother might have worn that during the holocaust. Not to be over dramatic, but it's just the principal of the matter. You could have turned it into the police, the most likely place someone would go to recover an article of significant financial/sentimental value. Sorry, but if that was my ring I'd be a little peeved if someone found it, didn't turn it in and was taking pics of it... but maybe that's just my cranky self
11.gif
And I know you said you didn't want to leave it with the police because then anyone could claim it, but someone kind of *has* claimed it... you.

ummm did you read that I found it in front of my work? im thinking the first place they are going to look is where they think they lost it. People actually get upset if you take it to the police because then its a longer process for them to get it back. This has happened before where someone left their rolex watch and we decided to hand it over to the police. We waited a couple of months and then handed it over to them. The owners of the rolex came back later and said they remembered they left their watch at my work. They were very upset the next time they came back because of all the paperwork and the documents they had to hand over to prove to the police that it really was their watch. So, this time I thought it better to keep but ended up forgetting about it till now.

And what would be rude is if I started taking pictures of it the moment they lost it. It''s been 2 and half years. I''m not claiming it as my own. I forgot that it was there and just found it while cleaning out the lost and found box and thought it wouldn''t do any harm to clean it up a little and take pictures of it to practice.

I''m not doing anything wrong.

Honestly, if I had lost my ring, I wouldn''t dream of checking with the police with any expectation that if it HAD been found it would both end up there, and that I''d get it back. I would greatly appreciate that you had taken the time to take care of it. It is possible the owner has no idea exactly where they lost it. Maybe it was left in a coat pocket and only determined lost at the end of the day, or sitting down in her car?

Would it be possible to tape a small sign to a window by the entrance that stated something along the lines of "found, ring (in what ever year) please describe at the desk if you think it could be yours."

Thank you. That is actually a very good idea. A lot of the people that come into my work are people that have been coming in for a long time. I would really really love to be the one to give back this ring to its rightful owner!

Just thought that the PSers would appreciate pics of a ring. I know I sure do love the pictures here on this site.

But now that I remember that there is a ring in the lost and found and since i have been educated on PS. I thought I would clean it and keep it somehwere safe away from the other items that could scratch or damage it.

but this sign idea is a for sure!

I also said is it ok? cuz i felt bad. Of course if I could find the owner of this ring, I would be so happy to give it back to them! To me, 2.5 years felt like a long time, but after hearing input and ways that I could still try to find this owner, of course I will not be keeping it for myself. I already have a ring and all rings are beautiful but this ring just isn''t my style. And there is no reason to lie and keep this ring for myself when obviously someone bought this ring because they love it.

Why does everyone keep lecturing me about almost every post I start? I try to live my life as a good moral person.

Well, I don't think that you should feel badly. It's not your fault that someone lost their ring and that you found it. One shouldn't think that it's like you went into a store and stole it, or like you hit someone over the head with your purse and demanded it.
32.gif

You don't need to feel like a bad person for this. Enjoy your ring.

Well YayTacori, I don''t know the place you live and what the normal process is there but here (in Australia) if it were me I might try for a while to find the rightful owner but then I would also go to the police as well. Here in order to make a jewellery claim on insurance you must report it to the police first. Perhaps ther person doesn''t know where it got lost and searched high and low where they were at the time but it was the wrong place. On the other hand, the police might say there''s nothing they can do now but maybe it''s worth asking? either way, it''s not your style so you''ve really got nothing to lose. the fact that one of the diamonds is a different colour to the rest could indicate it''s more of a vintage piece and therefore may have great sentimental value to someone. I don''t think you are right or wrong either way for what it''s worthl. PS though, the owner of the Rolex sounds like a bit of a ridiculous fool. if they knew they left it there wouldn''t you call and say so unless itg''s of so little value to you it''s not worth claiming anyhow?!

I don''t think rings like that just fall off people. Someone may have threw it because of a bad marriage and did not want it anymore. It''s been 2.5 years, I think it''s safe to say it''s yours. I think you have done what you can and I would keep it.

Don't feel bad. You did try by handing it in to work. The only thing I would have done in addition is put up signs around the place it was lost straight away ("Ring found here - call this number" - no details) - not saying this to criticize you, just an FYI for anyone else reading this who might one day find a ring of mine! Poorly sized rings can fall off, I know mine have in the past. I doubt I would have handed it in to the police. But it's too late now and it's not like you just took it straight home, so don't worry about it.

If it does make you feel bad, another option would be to donate it to charity? That's what I usually do when I find money on the street and can't locate the owner. Or sell it and donate a proportion of the money? Though I don't think there's anything wrong with just enjoying it and giving it a loving home
1.gif

Hey! I agree it looks like an old fashioned ring, maybe belonging to a senior citizen. I'm sorry you feel like people criticised you. It sounds like you tried hard to do the right thing, and it's not like you have been wearing the ring around or sold it or something! So I wouldn't feel bad.

I agree with the others that putting a sign would be a great way to try one more time to find the owner. Who knows what happened. Could be someone's ring is loose and it just fell off, or someone inherited the ring and was bringing it to an appraiser or jeweler to have it sized and they dropped it, or any number of things.... you will probably never know. I'd say make one more attempt to reach the owner in every way possible, and if that doesn't work, keep it or make sure the ring goes to someone who will treasure it.

You mention that someone left their rolex at your work. Do you work at a jewelry store?

I'm not doing anything wrong.

Yes, I read the whole post and am aware that you found it outside your office. I stand by what I originally said. If you don't feel any guilt over it then there's no problem on your end... I was just saying if it were me, I would have put up signs and turned it in. The odds that people you ask in your office would be the owner are pretty slim. Plenty of people turn stuff in and it is recovered very quickly. I wasn't trying to give you a lecture, there are many ways to get items back to their owners other than making office inquiries and relying on word of mouth. But now that you have practiced taking pictures I'm sure you will do the right thing and make those signs! Happy Holidays!

If it were me, I would have done everything possible to find the rings owner. After 2.5 years, though, I''d say it''d be nearly impossible to find the person. You can always post a lost/found on CL knowing there will be a lot of scammers trying to claim the ring (so you wouldn''t want to put a very complete description in the ad). If someone does come up with a picture, it would clearly prove that the ring belonged to the person.

There is always a chance someone will come across the add.

I''ve always dreamed of finding a huge diamond ring somewhere, but in reality, I''d feel too guilty to wear it. I would turn it into the police, but not a standard lost and found at the mall or where ever the ring was found - I wouldn''t trust those individuals.
