Congrats on the engagement!

Was it sold to your fiance as a 2ct? Ask your fiance if it came with a certificate (GIA/EGL/etc)- that should tell you the weight. If there''s no certificate then it''d probably be best to have it appraised like everyone else here recommended. As a guy its possible he got caught up in the excitement of purchasing your ring and the sales person might have mislead him...

Really lovely ring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it possible he said it''s one POINT TWO carats? That might be the misunderstanding. It really looks beautiful on your hand!

First off- Congratulations! You are adorable and the two of you make such a cute couple!

Second, to echo what others have said, either way its a beautiful ring. But yes, my concern would be that your FI didnt PAY for a 2carat ring. From your photo, it certainly doesnt look like 2 carats. Especially since photos send to make the diamond look even bigger than it really is. I would say it looks about 1ct, maybe slightly higher. If it helps, below is a diamond chart that give pretty close to scale real life sizes of various carat weights as well as their mm. So a 2ct would be approx 8.1mm and 1 carat would be about 6.4.

Again, the only reason to be concerned is to make sure your FI didnt get charged for something he didnt receive.

i agree, the diamond does look smaller than 2ct, but it is still a beauty, just need to make sure that FI got what he paid for, you two make a very beautiful couple and you look so happy together

congratulations!

I agree 100% with all of the suggestions/comments that say (1) your ring is beautiful! (2) what a happy looking couple :) and (3) just enjoy your engagement and don''t let this whole "is it really a 2 ct" eat you up. I also agree with the suggestion to have it appraised- at the very least, for insurance purposes. There is also a slight possiblity that your fiancee was misrepresented the size of the stone by the jeweler, in which case you''ll want to address that with the jeweler ASAP.

However, having diamond shopped extensively with my precious boyfriend, I think a likely situation is something like follows: Boyfriend looks at several stones. Jeweler finally shows him this one, let''s say it''s a 1.3 carat. Jeweler really turns up the sales pitch and talks about "how this one is your price range, and it''s a 1.3 but really looks a lot bigger- close to a 2 carat." Boyfriend nodds agreeingly (not really knowing what a 2 carat actually does look like) and gets really proud at the idea of giving you a 2 carat looking stone. Boyfriend buys the stone and is even more proud of his purchase and wants to you to be proud of him too...in his mind, it really is "almost a 2 carat stone."

In which case, you may want to tread carefully so as not to hurt the fiancee''s feelings? Good luck to you!

Firstly a big Congratulations!!..You must be so sxcited

I''m now curious for you as to what size the ring is......but regardless of that, it is such a beautiful ring....a real sparkler!!

Well, i can''t tell how big the diamond is because you don''t have a front on shot of the diamond, BUT IT IS BEAUTIFUL!

It suits your hand, and maybe it just look small because in your pics the rings are actually a bit sideways?

Regardless of the size, its a lovely ring :)

That totally sounds probable. I remember when I had a 1.23, my husband mentioned something about telling one of his friends that I had a 1.5 or 2ct ring. He wasn''t embellishing, he just didn''t know how the whole carat/size thing worked. I think people that aren''t around diamonds don''t really put much importance on exact stone size. Saying a stone is one size but looks like a larger size was a sales tactic I ran into many times. (You will need to get your ring appraised for insurance, so you will know soon enough.) I would just go get it appraised on your own, (it IS yours now) before mentioning anything about an appraisal, because if there is something fishy he may not want to share, he may tell you not to get the appraisal, then if you do it anyway, it will be a bad, trust breaking thing, that will haunt you. YOUR RING LOOKS GORGEOUS! ENJOY IT, NO MATTER WHAT EXACT SIZE IT IS! I would bet it is still bigger than most you will see around town.

Honestly, I think you should tell your fiance that you think you two should get your ring insured and that you need to get an appraisal in order to do this. I think it would be easier for him to find out this way whether the ring is significantly less than two carats. This way, you both know exactly what you have. I think it would much more embarassing if you two were showing your ring to people and someone else told him, "It looks like one carat to me."

Congratulations on your engagement! How exciting! I agree with everyone else -- your ring is gorgeous! It doesn''t matter what size it is -- it''s a classic beauty.

And whatever its size, your fiance doubtlessly spent a lot of money on it, so you should probably get it insured. And for that, you''ll need an independent appraisal. The appraiser will tell you more about the stone.

Your ring is lovely, and you guys are disgustingly cute!!!

I would go get it appraised tho, that doesn''t look like a 2ct, still tho gorgeous ring.

Congratulations!

First...your ring is beautiful and classic and the diamond is the ideal size for your hand. Once you get your wedding ring it will be even better. Second actually it may be about 1.5 or more (looks like the size of mine and I wear a 6.25 and my diamond is 1.6 in a plain setting simular to yours) but it dosen't matter what the carat weight is because IT IS BEAUTIFUL and the size looks fantastic on you. Your friends who think it's huge are right because most women DON"T get a huge rock like that, regardless of how many PS posters that you have seen with larger stones. Most women get less than 1 carat for their e-rings....period! Most of the pictures here posted make the stones appear bigger. Not everyone here who post (claiming to have) big diamonds have real diamonds, no matter WHAT the specs are that they give you. There are MANY who really have the real thing but the specs aren't important unless you are planning to sell it, or are just wanting to compare your stone to others. If you feel as though he was taken advantage of during the sell...stop worrying about it and make a note to self to not let this spoil the fact that you are his future WIFE. In reality specs don't equal to the love and the future you have to look forward to planning and living life with your future husband.

Congratulations again and enjoy this beautiful and special time in your life!!!

I personally don''t think it happens often but I suppose it could.

Lily Belle, is there an update to your situation?

Hi Lilybelle! First of all, I wanted to congratulate you on your engagement, and on your gorgeous ring. I think that it is just beautiful!!!
I am wondering if your stone could be a deep cut which could make it appear smaller than the carat weight.

When I got engaged, we were not educated about diamonds and just went out and bought the first one that we liked (we chose it together). I liked the asscher shape, and we chose a 1.64 ct asscher in a solitaire setting. However, when I started showing it to people, everyone commented that it looked smaller than a carat. The stone actually had a 75% depth, and did face up at about the same size as a .8 ct round diamond, which is why everyone thought it was under a carat. We went back to the jeweler, who had a great exchange policy, and I was able to exchange it for a more well-cut diamond, and I even switched to the round shape, which "faces up" larger than a square shape.

I just wanted to share my story to mention that sometimes diamonds can be of a larger carat weight, but face up smaller if they are deep. It''s really tough to tell from pictures, but you could always find out during the appraisal you need to get to have it insured.

My finace'' says that we don''t need to have it appraised because if something were to happen to the ring/setting that he has paid for the store insurance (as we did not buy online). I asked him again, and he is sticking with the ''almost/pretty much 2 carat'' thing. The only way I can think of is just to run into a jeweler store or just drop it and be happy. It looks like I have either a really deep stone or my fiance'' has been honest, but just doesn''t understand carat size/weight. I really appreciate everyone''s responses. Thank you for your time and help.

As a guy, his response sounds a little shady to me. And usually I side with the guy's perspective. Isn't the point of insurance to insure against theft or loss? Does your store provide that insurance? I highly doubt it. Seems like he does not want you to know its appraisal value for some reason -- I will leave it at that. Just my gut reaction.

hi lilybelle

store insurance normally covers things like defects to the rings, or lost stones DUE to a defect with the ring - but not things like theft etc. you still need an appraisal to put it on home contents insurance, for example.

i''m not sure if you saw my previous post re depth, but it''s really not possible for a 2ct brilliant cut stone to be so deep as to face up with the same dimensions as a 1ct stone.

for all sorts of reasons, this is something i''d want to get resolved. it''s one thing to ''just be happy'' - but it''s another thing to stick your head in the sand over what is quite a large issue. even for a pretty average stone, the difference in price is around $10,000. unless you have money to burn, i''d want to know if a store was ripping me off to that extent. and frankly, if ''anybody else'' was telling me porky pies, i''d want to know that too - especially before i was put in the situation of running round telling people i had a 2ct ring when i didn''t.

good luck, lilybelle.

Store insurance is not the same thing as private insurance that will cover loss, damage, theft etc etc. Obviously it is up to you, but with a 2ct diamond, which would be worth upwards of $15000, I personally would pay to get proper insurance.

And...

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!

uhh i dunno... this is a tough situation... it is pretty obvious that your diamond is not 2 ct (even if cut deeply) but it may be a little over 1 carat at most... Thing is your guy may be trying to impress you or do good by you by telling you it''s around 2 carats... I think it might cause a huge argument to keep insisting on finding out otherwise... If I were you I would just let it go, and be happy with what he gave you... I would stop going around and telling people it''s 2 carats since you know now that it isn''t.... But you may really hurt his ego if you keep bringing it up. As for insurance, if you don''t want to get it (which you probably should) then I really don''t see the need to get an appraisal. But if you want to get it insured, an appraisal would tell you the carat size right away.

I also think he''s trying to impress you by saying it''s 2 carats. Like someone else said I wouldn''t go around telling people it''s 2 carats. If it really doesn''t bother you then just enjoy you''re beautiful ring. If you continue to ask him it will lead to unecessary arguments. You can still go to a jeweler and compare your ring with others to get a better idea if you don''t want it appraised. whatever you choose I wish you the best!!!

Hi Lily
congratulation for your engagement. Your ring is really very wonderful.

It look very beautiful and you too.

LilyBelle,
Congratulations! You ring looks more like 1.2 ct than 2 ct. Yet, so what? How many young girls are lucky enough to get an ering with a diamond 1 ct or larger? I didn''t get a diamond ering when I was engaged.

My coworker gave his wife a CZ ring and told her it was diamond. Mind you, he was in his 60''s at the time. His wife was so happy and proud about her "diamond" ring that she showed it off to her friends. I am not sure if her friends ever had the heart to tell her. Eventually, one day, she raised her hand and kept staring at the bling, and finally figured it out herself that her "diamond" could not be real. She took it off, and never wore it again. She never said anything to my cheap coworker about the ring.

oh that''s horrible what he did to his wife. I know of a Dr who gave his wife a CZ while in med school but he told her. He also promised that when he could afford it he would buy her a real diamond and her dream setting.

2.gif
Not at all! My RB diamond is 1.6ct F/VS1.

What I am saying is that by looking at her pictures her diamond looks about the size of mine on my hand. The point I was trying to make is by her looking at soooo many photos of 2ct diamonds or more close (close up shots) it may appear that her stone is small to her. AND, she has to realize that not everyone that post a picture of their e-rings has the real thing so she shouldn''t get so caught up with keeping up with folks to have an ACTUAL 2ct diamond. I do understand that her fiance stated that it''s 2cts, but in the excitement he could have been exaggerating because it could be it is over 1.5 and the jeweler told him that it''s close to 2cts. Not everyone that buys a diamond is so information loaded about buying a diamond as the norm here on PS. There are thousands of regular guys who go to B&M stores. It is still the norm. To put a thought in her head that he might be being dishonest with her (some people have did this) or that he was cheated, is not very nice. She should be excited about the fact that he loves her and wants her to be his wife and he wants to be her husband because that is what is important. They should just pay attention to big purchases in the future of their lives together and perhaps do some homework before making them. Focusing on the size and comparing it with others IS NOT a good way to start this venue. Stay focused on what is important...the RELATIONSHIP. He bought what he could afford for now so be grateful, be happy and know that it ain''t THAT crucial! Later on in their marriage they can always upgrade.

Coming from a guy''s perspective, when I go out to spends thousand of dollars on something, I''ll make sure I''m getting what I''m paying for. There isn''t a single guy out there that''s going to plop down that much cash and not know exactly how many carats he''s getting.
