I''ve got the diamond. Now I am looking for a setting. My girlfriend prefers the 3-stone style. My goal is to find one that not only compliments the center stone but also has that little bit of uniqueness to it. A design that sets it apart just a bit. Nothing too bizarre or fancy. Kind of like traditional with a small twist.

I would like to keep it under $1,000. Of course, most of the settings I''ve found in this style for under that price have pretty small sidestones. Could anyone direct me to some sites/designers who have nice 3-stone settings that are affordable?

Very much appreciated,
B

A very basic 3 stone mounting without the diamonds is going to be close to $300. This leaves you with about $700 for a pair of stones. While I don't know what type of center you chose, I think you need to look at diamonds in the 4mm round range (1/4ct each) if you don't want to or cannot allow lower quality types.

For something different you might consider pear shaped sides. They offer good value right now and eventually will regain popularity. Besides, they will look larger for the weight if you select properly.

Thanks for your response. Pear shaped sides (the ones that I have seen) do offer that slightly different look. Thanks for the suggestion.

After hunting around the net for a while yesterday, I came upon this setting bestgem.com. I really like it. Their price is $790 for white gold. And upgrade to platinum would be $1,320. The ring specs are as follows:

Metal
14Kt White Gold

Width
2.5mm

Diamond Information

Type
2 Pear Shape Diamonds

Weight
0.37 ctw

Color
F/G

Clarity
VVS

Cut
Excellent

Does this seem like a fairly good deal? And, if my local jeweler doesn't have something very similar to this design in stock, how hard would it be for me to buy this setting online and then have them set the diamond I buy at their shop? Would it just involve a possible mounting swap to accomodate my diamond size?

Thanks again,
bB

The center stone in the ring's picture should be about 7-8mm in diameter. You may want to consider what the proportions of the ring would become with other sizes (or shapes) of center stone. I suppose that only the "head" of the ring will change to accomodate a center, so smaller stones may allow a gap between the center and sides - something not usually considered desirable. At less than 20 points each, those pears would be quite discrete ( ~ 4mm long), as woud be the ring (relative to the predictable size of the pears, the "2mm" wisth given for the band would fit the widest part of it).

If the picture I am trying to describe sounds good, than the ring fits the bill.

Thanks valeria. Just to let you know, the diamond I am putting in the center is round cut, .82 carat. So if you said that the picture looks like it had about a 2 carat round placed in the pic, then do you think that the smaller stone would acheive more of that balance you spoke of? And six prongs might be too much for a diamond that size. Might cover it up too much.

Thanks,
bB
