Sizing question for the pros

Hello,

I''m taking my platinum solitaire ring to get resized tomorrow and I have a question about sizing beads. I got sizing beads put in a few months ago and I LOVE them, but my ring is now too small with them in (I could barely get it over my knuckle today to take it to the store -- haven''t taken it off in months). My question is twofold:

1) How much bigger should I have the ring made than my finger if I want the sizing beads to stay in and stop the ring from spinning -- but also want to be able to take the ring off? My finger size is just under a 5, and my knuckle size is about a 5.5.

2) How much can the jeweler stretch a ring to make it bigger? My ring size right now is a 4 and 7/8. (I got the ring to fit my finger before I added the beads.) Is there an advantage to stretching over cutting?

Thank you SO much in advance for your advice. I''ve never been to the jeweler before (my fiance got the ring out of state), so I don''t know how knowledgeable they are about beads, and I would love to have a little expert advice before I head in there.

I had the exact same problem. Fit perfect with the beads but could barely get in on/off. I had the beads taken out and did this:

It looks awesome, Jazmine. Can I ask how the sizing works on it? Is the ring sized to your knuckle so you can get it off easier? And do you know how much of a difference in size it corrects from your knuckle to your finger?

Without the horseshoe sizer, the ring is too big when it is on my finger. It never stayed upright and was always spinning. The sizer presses outward when you put the ring on and take it off. It expands all the way to the inside of the band. Then it pops back into place when the ring is in place. The ring is too big without the sizer thought still a little snug to take on and off. Had I gone up in size the ring would go on and off easier but would be too big once it was on and slide all over. My ring, because of the pave work, can not be sized easily, so I didn''t want to go that route. What type of band do you have?

I have a plain platinum band, so it can be resized easily, but the band itself is very thin (I think it''s 2 mm?). Would a horseshoe sizer even work in a band that thin? Also, I''ve heard that horseshoe sizers can be more fragile and can actually come off with wear and tear ... I was worried about that considering my band is so thin and the sizer won''t be able to be fixed on that securely. What do you think?

Wow, Jazmine, that is so cool. I have never seen anything like that before. Can you think of any reason it wouldn''t work with a men''s ring? My DBF has been trying on rings and anything that fits over his knuckle is too big for his finger. BTW I love the E-W marquise!

Thanks for the complement! I''m sure it would work just fine with a men''s ring.

I was told that the sizer should hold up very well (10 years or so) as long as I take the ring on/off without too much violent force. Normal off and on should not affect it. You will have to ask a jeweler if your ring is too thin, I don''t know the answer to that. I would think it would be okay, my shank itself is quite thin. You can also get a 1/2 horsehoe, where there is just one side.

Just wanted to thank you again for the advice, Jazmine. I got the horseshoe sizer installed this weekend (the jeweler also recommended it above the sizing beads) and it''s wonderful! He had to size the ring up substantially, which scared me a little, but it fits perfectly with the horseshoe inside and I can get the ring off so much easier now. Thanks so much for your help!

Oh, I''m so glad! Isn''t that the best feeling? Now you can just enjoy your ering without the pain of trying to get it on and off and your beautiful diamond will always be staring right up at you!
