sizing channel settings

My friend took her channel set anniversary band to be sized down a size and they told her it couldn''t be done because the diamonds would pop out. How is this so if they are set in a channel with the gold overlapping the diamonds? It seems like the gold would prevent the diamonds from poping out.

Excellent explanation Steve its exactly what my jeweler said when I asked him about sizing a channel set ring.

He did say that one option for a small change was slightly flattening the bottom of the ring.
I think one size might be too much for that however and it might look bad.
Sizing bands or beads would be the other option.
