Hey all. I'm about to purchase a great sized 1.46 ct. diamond (7.30-7.33 x 4.48mm) and I will be putting it into a cushion halo with split shanks. My girlfriend has size 3.25 finger and I'm now starting to wonder if this will be too big/flashy. Without a halo, the 1.46 would look lovely I'm sure on her hand, but now I'm wondering if with the halo, the finger coverage may be a bit much. One consideration would be to make the melee quite small similar to the one in picture, thus to cut down on finger coverage.

My intentions was to buy a diamond that is both beautiful (and an excellent performer) and large enough where we wont be looking for upgrades anytime in the near future (if not ever). Reason she wants the halo was because she wanted something lower profile that wont "snag" on things. Hoping that with a 1.46 (compared to say a ~1.34), we won't have the problem of it being "too big" for her lifestyle.

I have already browsed many of the current threads involving showing small fingers, but wanted to gather your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi OP, halo's are a personal preference (hers, it sounds) but since you are asking for other's opinions, I'll give you mine. I do think the halo with that size stone will be HUGE. But maybe that's what she wants, a real rock! I'm with her, too, lol. I love solitaires and that's what I'll be doing for mine but feel that may be one day I'll want a change to a 3 stone (enhancer jackets for the solitaire) or get a halo for a change up. Besides, when you add melee and their prongs, the snag issue is possible, less so with a solitaire I should think. But definitely get the intended what she wants. Maybe she should try on halo rings of that size and see what she thinks before doing the custom halo on your stone? You could always go down in carat size and put the money towards the setting.

yes smaller melee will normally result in a narrower halo.

The "snag" issue has more to do with prongs and sharp corners. And a halo with prongs can still snag things. If snagging is a serious concern I'd look into a bezel halo. Lifestyle has a lot to do with your choice. Keep in mind that those little melee stones need to be babied, so if she is a very active person who won't take the ring off, then a halo may not be the best choice anyway.

As for finger coverage... yes that will take up a lot of finger real estate on her small finger. The bling factor may be something to consider - where you live, what do others wear, what does she do for a living, will she feel self conscious (or even unsafe) if there is too much there? I can't answer that for you.

Was there supposed to be a pic attached? I don't see one.

Hi! Just thought I would chip in here.
My finger is size 3.25. To give you some perspective my heart stone in solitaire setting measures 6.67x6.1mm. Unfortunately I seem to be having trouble uploading images but here's the link.

As to whether she considers it too large for her is individual preference. I personally don't feel comfortable with a larger stone than what I currently have, even though I work in a wealthy part of town where I see clients with boulder sized rocks on their fingers. In general we dont often see large stones in Australia.

I think the key to it will be getting a really delicate looking halo, a thick chunky halo is going to look bulky, a delicate fine halo is going to look elegant.

What about a classic 3 stone ring-baguettes on the side or pears? Classic. Halos are very difficult to get just right -especially with such tiny fingers. The diamonds in the halo may be so small they may have the appearance of more metal than diamonds.

I have a size 4.25-4.5 finger and recently upgraded to a 2.55 round solitaire and it's not too big or ostentatious in my opinion. Obviously depends on her taste and how comfortable she'll be showing off her new bling!

Thank you all for feedback! I decided since she knows I'm looking for a ring, I might as well just ask her what she thinks (about a size 1.46). Her response was "I'm sure whatever you get me will be beautiful. As long as it doesn't spread across the entire finger, I'm sure I'll be fine. I think you might care more about the size than I do."

Okay, created something out of nothing. A delicate halo it will be!

For those interested, here is the link to my CAD page, I'll be updating it in a few days when I get my 2nd draft back from ERD...

As for the diamond, I'm running into troubles with the 1.46 now. Here is the link to my diamond hunt...
