My fiance needs a size 14 wedding band. We would like platinum, but have been told that the ring will need to be cast due to the size. He wants a plain, flat, round inside wedding band. Is it true we must have this cast?
I get orders for bigger sizes than that every week, it is not that uncommon. Any jeweler should be able to do the job. Don't let them charge you a premium for "custom" either - all sizes are made and cast the same way, it isn't any harder for your jeweler to make a 14, a 20 or a 2 - assuming your jeweler makes them instead of stocking someone elses work, in which case they wouldn't have anything over 12 or 13.
If that is the case, I'd find a new jeweler that does do his or her own work anyway....
BTW, the metal cost on a plat band that size is going to be huge. That will probably be at least a 12 gram + finished weight. I agree with the last post, Titanium is definitely an option to look into, as is White Gold. I recently CNC milled a machine turned Stainless steel and 18k ring for a large hand - there are a lot of options for mens rings nowadays you can look into.
