Hi All!

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Single Stone in regards to their custom settings. I am completely indecisive about what I would want my "forever" setting to be, so he is planning to purchase a stone a cushion or asscher, and propose with it in a temp setting. I have educated him about these cuts and he has already chosen a PS vendor. I have absolutely no idea when the proposal would be or if he is even in the market at the moment-- he just asked me to explain what I would like so that he can surprise me when the time is right.

So this got me thinking!!!

Here are some examples of settings that I adore.

I have always loved Leon's cold fusion:

Single Stone:

http://singlestone.com/index.php?page=collections&catID=3&pID=633&startRow=8

And I would halo this ring:
http://singlestone.com/index.php?page=collections&catID=3&pID=990&startRow=17

I'm also LOVE this but without the extra pave around the side of the halo and no diamonds under the basket because I would wear it with a wedding band

I am also loving the work that I have seen from Victor Canera on PS lately-- do you think that he would be willing to create a custom interpretation based on any of these rings? I would love to work with him-- from what I've gathered, people really seem to enjoy working with him.

So in short, does anyone know how much a setting like these would cost from Single Stone or Victor Canera?

Thank you so much!!

Any time I've gotten pricing from Single stone they have been on the high end. They make beautiful settings though. All the recent work we've seen of Victor's around her lately is just stunning and I'd probably choose him first. I have never received a quote from him but from what others have posted his pricing is fair for the handforged work he does but you will pay more for it.

I'd email both to get some quotes :) I'm sure both do great work (I've only seen Singlestone's work in person, but VC's photos look great!). I have gotten quotes on SS settings and they are on the pricier end, but when you see them in person, you'll see what you're paying for. It literally looks like tiny little petite fairies made the rings :) I'd love to see a VC setting in person one day.... le sigh

Thank you for your responses!

LGK's Victor Canera is absolutely amazing! I'd love to be able to consider a setting like that, but my stone will be 1.3-1.5 carats so I think that it might be too small for it!!!

By on the "high" end do you mean around 5K? I'm hesitant to ask vendors directly for quotes since I don't know when the proposal will be and I know that I wouldn't jump right into a project immediately. I just don't want to waste a vendor's time and figured that PSers may be able to give me a ball park estimate on what settings like those may cost from Single Stone or Victor Canera.

Any more feedback would be super helpful! Thank you again

Re: custom settings made by Single Stone - please (please) make sure that you choose a design that is something in the style of settings they usually do, or better yet something they've already done.

When I got a quote from SS back in early 09, it was almost 5k... since the price of platinum and diamonds have risen since then.. I would guess more now? I got a quote for the http://singlestone.com/index.php?page=collections&catID=3&pID=737&startRow=4 but for a 2.73 carat antique cushion.

VC is very reasonably priced around 4500 for a simple halo. He was very prompt with responses and is very honest with what will work and what will not work. I ended up not using him because I fell in love with another design.

I've seen SS settings in person and as Shortee78 said, it does indeed look like tiny little fairies made the settings because even under a loupe the miligraine looked impeccable. That being said, I would also like to recommend JbEG as well for antique styled settings. I am actually getting their bella halo for my new avc.

jjc, thank you for your advice. I must ask though, have there been any problems with customer's asking Single Stone for custom settings that are new designs? I'm just wondering why you seem so adamant about keeping any Single Stone ring the same.

Thank you so much for these estimates. They seem to be right around where I'll be comfortable spending for a setting whenever I decide which style I truly LOVE. I keep flip flopping from a three stone to a vintage-y halo design that is a bit more intricate and different from the Harry Winston style. I adore that single stone setting -- and maybe the quote would be similar because my stone would be so much smaller. Have you seen that particular setting in person? I wish a PSer owned a ring like that so that I could see how it looks on the hand!!

I wish you all the luck in the world and can't wait to see your finished ring-- JBEG settings are really gorgeous!

I got a quote on one of the Singlestone settings you linked and it was $3500. The quote I got for a different ring (but also with a halo) from Victor was around $5500. So you may find Singlestone less on the less ornate halos.

The thing about Halos is that the fee only nominally goes down with a smaller sized stone because of all the labor involved with the pave portions of the design. I have seen that particular design in person as I've been to SS's LA store. The gallery of the ring is gorgeous! I recommend emailing Ari for pictures of the underside. It is an intricate design. The thing is too, platinum has gone up since 2009.

Diamondseeker -- I guess the quotes from single stone can fluctuate quite a bit, since resonance.of.life got a near 5K quote for one of the less intricate halos! Good to know! Thank you for this information-- it will be very useful to me when I am trying to figure out which setting to choose!

Resonance.of.life: Thank you so much for your replies. It's really nice to know that you've seen that ring in person and thought that it looked well made and beautiful! I know that the prices of platinum and diamonds have risen so much lately (UGH), and I'm not even ready to buy-- but I still think that getting ballpark estimates now will allow me to figure out roughly how much a setting like that would cost!

Yssie, Thank you for those links-- I have been trying to find as many threads on Single Stone and VC as possible to hear reviews about how it is to work with these vendors. When the time comes, I definitely want to work with someone that can create the highest quality setting possible but is also respectful and has great customer service.

Everyone has been so helpful! Thank you again!! :D

I have one other question-- I mentioned it in the recent 'can you negotiate with PS vendors thread'.... I have been following the prices of octavia asschers since they first came out. I'm having a hard time remembering exactly what the prices were for this particular stone that has been in their inventory for almost 2 years: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/7104/
From what I recall, the diamond started off ~12K, went up to ~17K and is now ~21K ;( . Since clearly GOG would have made an excellent profit on the stone at ~12K, would they be willing to negotiate? I obviously would never expect to pay 12K but I feel that there should be quite a bit of wiggle room on stone being marked up that significantly after being in their inventory for years!!!

Thoughts?

I'm not trying to put heat on GOG specifically-- it's just the only example I have.

The thing is, diamond vendors have to replace every stone they sell with a stone at current market prices, so even if a stone has been in inventory a long time, they have to pay a lot to replace it. That is why they can't go down much on a current stone. But as in buying any expensive item, you cannot really lose anything by asking!

Diamondseeker2006 hit the nail on the head. Because in order to replace their inventory they also have to buy at current market values.

Wow! That makes a heck of a lot more sense! Why didn't I think of that?! Thank you!

Yes, I had a very bad experience. I ended up having the ring re-made elsewhere. Since it was my ering, it was pretty traumatizing and it really soured what should have been a happy time.
ETA - Actually, now that I think about it, the ring was based on an antique they had in store, combined with the basket of earrings they'd already made. But I seem to be the only one on PS who's had this kind of experience with them, so maybe I just got unlucky? New bench guy?

I really love single stone. I have three of their pieces and they've restored a few more for me. I used existing designs so can't comment on the custom process but I find them a pleasure to work with and in 2010 when I bought my pieces I found the prices very fair.

Bottom line - decide on the setting you want first and then get quotes from selected vendors. Go with the vendor that works in the style of the ering you want. Many of us learnt the hard way - just because a vendor does great work doesn't mean they can make your ring great if it is a different style than what they are used to.

Agreed.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I really appreciate your sharing it with me-- it is always good to hear both positive and negative feedback about vendors!

Kelpie-- thank you for responding... I'm glad you're happy with your Single Stone purchases-- Your ring is AMAZING!

CharmyPoo-- I'm just trying to narrow down the general style I think that I would like-- and get a rough estimate of what it may cost. I still don't know my style yet--I love the vintagey stuff from Single Stone but have never seen anything like it in person.

I always loved the H.W halo, but I would like something a little different like maybe Victor Canera's Anne Marie Split Shank Halo: http://www.victorcanera.com/jewelry/engagement-rings/the-anne-marie-split-shank-halo.html

All in all-- I'm just doing some research!!

And thank you for the advice -- I agree, it is best to as a vendor to do something that is characteristic of their usual work!

I'd try to get to some jewelry stores and try on some rings so you can get a good feel for what you like and don't like. There have been many designers that I have fallen in love with online pics and then when I saw the rings in person they didn't look right on me at all. And the opposite has been true, that I style I didn't really love online, I liked a lot in person. If you have an antique jeweler close by you can get a good feel if you like vintage style settings too. I'd try to find a place that carries a wide variety of designers if you can.

I looked back at my email, and I had quotes for both of the halo settings you linked (your first 2 SS links) and the quotes were $3800 with center stones up to around 1.5 cts. (less than 2 months ago).

Thank you for your advice!! I definitely need to hit some jewelry stores and try on as many styles as possible. I've always loved H.W micropave ring.... but one of my boyfriend's family members got engaged with it a few years ago and I don't want the exact same ring as her. I'm just trying to find rings that are similar enough to that style that I love but different enough from the H.W ring. I also recently tried on an asscher three stone with tapered baguettes which was gorgeous-- and now that is on the table too if I get an asscher. I don't know there are just so many beautiful settings out there-- I know it will take me a million years to choose!

I am worried about not liking Single Stone's settings in person. Unfortunately, I don't have any antique jewelers in the area. When I'm actually engaged maybe I'll try to get out to C.A and see Single Stone and Victor Canera in person-- my boyfriend has always wanted to go to C.A anyway!!! :naughty:

Diamondseeker, thank you so much for your contributions. This is really helpful to me! I really appreciate it. :wavey:

You are welcome! And many of us can relate to your dilemma! There are so many beautiful rings that it makes it almost impossible to narrow down to just one! You can see that there are many resets here for that reason! Good luck!

You are looking at an average between $3000 to $6000 for a custom piece for the vendors you are talking about here :)

Good thing I have a lot of time to do research, try on a ton of rings, contemplate and save
Thank you for all of your help!
