The story so far: wife loses 3 diamond anniversary ring, insurance adjuster waffling over on-file appraisel, blah, blah, blah.

All diamonds are SI1 for carity, I for color. Center is .49 and sides add to .51 for a total of 1 carat.

All I want to to know for any future discussions is whether these grades of small diamonds have held value, depreciated, or appreciated over the last two years.

Thanks in advance for any info and/or pointers to other web info that would help set my expectations.

Diamond prices have risen slowly but steadily, though there is less difference in sizes < 2ct than above. If you insured them for a flat value this may not be helpful though. In most cases it is the client's responsibility to update insurance valuations - although there are jewelry insurers who will contact you periodically to suggest updates.

If your situation does allow negotiation you can get pricing lists for two years ago and now to demonstrate differences. The most common published guide is Rapaport. I believe Dave Atlas of AGA in Philadelpia mentioned that his firm has lists dating back for quite some time. If this will help your case you might contact him for input: http://www.gemappraisers.com/

Best wishes for a happy ending.

Due too the price of gold and plat rising setting prices have skyrocketed also over the last 2 years, talking to an appraiser as John recomended sounds like a very good idea.

Remember too Piglet that cut comes into it. Stones of the same clarity, colour and carat weight could be priced differently because of how well or not they are cut.
