Hi everyone, been reading these forums for a couple months now and I appreciate all the indirect help I''ve received!

I recently purchased a platinum setting from Robbins Bros (she loved the design and I couldn''t find it anywhere else) that had a few side diamonds in a channel setting. Everything looked great, I took it to a jewel shop within the family and had a beautiful princess cut diamond mounted onto it. Two days later, all of a sudden the biggest side diamond on one side has turned all yellowish and brown and looks just awful. Does anyone know what might have caused this? I believe the side diamonds are E or F colored so none should be yellowish-brown. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Mustard?

Just kidding...couldn't help it. In all seriousness, do some strong cleaning and see if that helps (boiling water, ammonia, soft toothbrush, etc.). If that's not it, no idea -- maybe an expert has an idea.

It could very well be something like mustard. Maybe there is something that has gotten under the diamonds that is tinting a couple of them. We can 'paint" diamonds with blue ink and that will wash off readily, but that is such an easily discovered fraud no one legitimate would do it anymore...Admittedly, people used to do this sort of trickery, but now the word gets around too fast. You need much more technical tricks today.

You may need someone to pressure steam the ring. I sure hope that fixes the problem. While the side stones could be off color, it is not likely. Diamonds DO NOT ever fade from coloress to off color. It is going to be something much less surprising.

Thank you both for your advice! We tried cleaning it twice with the cleansing solution that came with it but no luck so far. I'll try again tonight, cleaning it harder if possible.

have you taken it to the jeweler to either get it professionaly cleaned or show them what happened to you ring? they should be trying to help you!

I took it into the Robbins Brothers here in Glendale, CA, and was basically left feeling like I was trying to run some sort of scam on them. The manager was extremely rude to me while pointing out that their warranties are all null & void if another jeweller touches the setting. They didn't even examine it to determine what was wrong. They "cleaned" it and gave it back to me, essentially saying "tough luck." I took it the jeweller who did the mounting and they saw that the setting had a problem with it. The small holes under the diamonds had a bit of excess metal which was trapping liquid or other things inside the setting, causing the side diamond to look yellow/brown. This should definitely be RB's responsibility since it has nothing to do with the main diamond being set on the setting. I emailed the website with a nasty complaint and received a message from the store's general manager so I'll be calling him back today to discuss it. Thanks for your help!

Who sold you the setting? RB or the shop you took it to where they figured out what was wrong with it?

I'm glad that it looks like its beginning to work out though!

I have heard of this happening to people who are on well water and the tint is caused by excess mineral deposits but that takes more time than two days. I see you have the problem pegged already though. Good luck.

It sounds like your jeweler burned the side diamonds. Did the ring need sizing? Did the head need to be modified for a Princess cut diamond ?

Is the ring white gold or platinum ? It could have been left in the rhodium to long and the solder under the diamond turned yellow
