I have a 14 year old kitty that has in the last week lost a ton of weight...he probably weighs 1/2 what he did before. He now sleeps all the time. Over the weekend he had some diarrhea. He smells horrible...even after I gave him a bath. While I gave him a bath he was limp like a rag doll...not at all his normal self. He is still drinking water & using the litter box. He just seems very fragile all of a sudden. Any ideas what could be causing this. I know he is old, but it''s the suddeness that puzzles me.

It could be many things, but please get him to the vet as an emergency ASAP.

OH my breaks to hear that! VET NOW!!! Please keep us posted!

We got a vet appointment for him this afternoon. Hopefully they can tell us what it is and better yet fix it. My other big fear is that it''s something contageous that my other cat could get too.

Good, please let us know how he gets on, hang in there.

Oh, I hope everything is ok! I know if a cat is *acting* sick there is something really wrong. I hope it is treatable!

I''m hoping for good news for you ID. This is such a scary situation. Even when they are really really sick, cats rarely act sick. Hope your little guy will be ok. Until then, I''m thinking about you!

We just got back from the vet with our cat. Not good news. He has a tumor in his abdomen that is likely a cancer and kidney failure. He''s severly dehydrated. The vet confirmed that he has lost almost 50% of his body weight. There''s nothing they can do. We took him home so we can tell our kids so the kids can say goodbye then made an appointment to put him to sleep tomorrow because the vet said he is basically starving to death. So, sad. I hate that this had to happen. I hate having to tell the kids tonight too.

OMGosh. I am so sorry that was the outcome. Cats really do show when something is wrong, don''t they... I hate to say there is an upside to this, but remember that you don''t want him to suffer, and you are doing what is right for his best interest. I''ll say a prayer for him, and your family... Sooo Sorry that you are having to deal with this!

I''m so sorry. I lost my Max to that same thing almost a year ago. With Max, we were able to keep him going for about another month by giving him prednisolone twice a day. The steroid kept the tumor from growing and stimulated his appetite, which means that I had to feed him tuna 5 times a day. It was good to have him a bit longer, but it was just prolonging the inevitable, so I wouldn''t really recommend it. I''m so, so sorry for you and your kitty. You are doing the right thing, and of course you know that, but I know it''s painful.

My heart goes out to you.

sumbride...the vet gave us that option too but she didn't think it would work well because he was so dehydrated and she thinks the tumor is in his small intestine. It's the size of a plum.... In my cat's case it seem like it might prolong the pain. The vet also said that lympoma frequnely comes from the FLV which is transferrable to my other cat so now we'll need to get her tested too.....It's going to be a sad night...

I''m so sorry to hear your sad news. Its heartbreaking telling the kids stuff like this.

I definitely understand. You don''t need to prolong the suffering. I hope your other kitty is ok.

Here''s something that helped me when I was in the middle of it. Somebody sent it to me and it hit home and made me feel slightly comforted. I hope it helps you too.

If It Should Be

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don''t let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We''ve had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
You''d not want me to suffer so,
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they''ll tend,
And please stay with me til the end,
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.

Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I''ve been saved.
Please do not grieve, it must be you
Who has this painful thing to do.
We''ve been so close, we two, these years,
Don''t let your heart hold back its tears.

I''m so sorry to hear such sad news

Sending lots of hugs and good thoughts your way and hope all is well with your other kitty.

oh islanddreams, i''m so sorry to read this ... many hugs to you and your family and sending wishes of peace and comfort to kitty.

I''m so sorry to hear about your Kitty

I hope that you can find some comfort in knowing that he will be in a better place. Stay strong..

Oh Island, my heart just breaks for you. Usually when animals get sick, they go quickly...and it''s always so hard on the people that have loved them and cared for them all their lives, animals really do become our children.

. I am literally crying for you, because the pain involved in doing whats best is so hard, because the animals don''t understand...and the children feel the loss so deeply.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so sorry to hear about your precious cat. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I too am so sorry to hear about your pending loss. We just had to have one of our cats put down just a couple week''s ago. It''s just so devastating to have to go through this. Again, hugs to you and your family. I truly know what you''re going through.

I''m so sorry to hear about your poor kitty. It sounds like you are doing the humane and loving thing though by ending his suffering and giving him a peaceful end.

My heart goes out to you and your family at this difficult time.

I am so sorry. I have been in the same situation with a cat with an abdominal tumour. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. It was a very rough night at my house last night...having to tell the kids. They were both super upset as were we. Our poor kitty was still wanting to be with us. He even managed to jump (well climb) his way onto my bed so he could sit with me. Just layed there looking so sad. It was heart-wrenching this morning letting the kids say their last goodbyes before going to school then coming to work today. My husband & I will take kitty to the vet at lunchtime. We know it''s the right thing to do, but it is so hard to kill something that is still living with personality. There is a huge piece of me that really just wanted to wake up this morning to find kitty curled up permanently "asleep." Would be so much easier....

I hear every word you have said. I am so sorry, I wish there was something I could do, and we all feel that way, that it would be so much easier for them to pass in their sleep to so we don''t have to make the decision. Please know we are here to support you in any way we can. I have been in your shoes many times, it is never ever easy.

I''m so very sorry to hear this. My eyes are all tearing up reading this thread. My heartfelt condolences go out to you with lots of HUGS for you and your kitty. You and your kitty are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry that you''re going through this. The sickness and death of a pet is a heartbreaking experience. Please remember that you''re doing the right thing.

Also remember that you gave your kitty a lot of wonderful years full of fun, love, and caring, and I''m sure he loves and trusts you more than anything in the world. You''re doing the right thing by ending his suffering.

I will be thinking of you this week-- please come back to PS if you need any supportive words!

I''m back at work. We took kitty at lunch time. He didn''t go easily. They tried twice in his vein and had to finally inject directly into his liver. He still lingered on for over 15 minutes....I thought it was supposed to be quick.

I am so sorry. I know that when we took my dog about 5 years ago (she was very ill and her organs were shutting down) the vet told us sometimes it isn''t quick and they can even yelp if they are in pain. I am sorry.

I am so sorry. Maybe if he was dehydrated they had trouble finding a vein perhaps. I know how hard it is, but you made the kindest decision for him and spared him pain and suffering which was inevitable. Sometimes it can take a little while to put them to rest, I will be keeping you all in my thoughts.

Thank you for your thoughts.

The vet said something about his veins being so thin and his heart being weak so it took awhile to reach his heart. Even after he went to sleep his heart continued beating for a long time. Guess he was a fighter to the end.

Tonight my husband is leaving town to drive to his cousin''s funeral 7 hours away. I can''t get off work so I''ll be home with 2 very upset kids alone. It''s going to be a long night. But I do know it was the right thing to do for kitty.

It sounds like his body had already begun to shut down, so you were just making his passing easier ID. I really wish there was something I could do to help, but please know that many many people will be keeping you, your children and your precious baby in our thoughts and prayers. It takes time, he was a huge part of your life for 14 years and it will hurt forever, but in time, the pain will ease somewhat and you will be able to remember him with joy, as will your children.
