We don't have another appt. for our almost 14yr old cat until tomorrow morning, so thought I would turn to the PS'rs for some ideas. This is long-sorry, but would love to hear any personal experiences others have had.

Our cat will be 14yrs old next month. He had been eating ravenously, starting about 3 weeks ago and began to lose weight about a week ago and very quickly. He has always been a big eater and very vocal about wanting more than he would get for food. But this was even more than his normal food wantings.

When he began losing weight we brought him in for a thyroid test and a fructosamine test(gives a picture of what his blood sugar has been like over the last 3 weeks) and both were in normal limits.

He was diagnosed with diabetes last January, was on a decreasing dose of insulin for several months as we changed his diet and he was eventually able to come off insulin all together and just have the diabetes controlled with diet.

He was on dry food only and always a high quality dry food, but we finally got him to switch to all soft food after 13yrs of trying. He did well on the soft and lost weight(which he needed to do) thus a good thing at the time.

I kept pushing the Vet for other ideas than to begin insulin again, because he was going hypoglycemic on just a half a unit of insulin before we took him off all together. She said the only other thing she could think of was to test for Exocrine Pancreatic Enzyme deficiency. But they would need to send the blood out to be tested and with the Holiday we would need to wait until this week to do it.

I wasn't comfortable doing nothing over the couple of days we were out of town for the Holiday, so while he was as the Vets office I had them start him on digestive enzymes to see if that helped.

He ended up beginning to eat less with the enzymes in his food(which the Vet said is normal, as they don't tend to like them) and lost more weight over the weekend(he's down to 7.9lbs---10lbs is pretty good for him).

He hasn't been himself yesterday or today-you can tell he's not feeling well and is cold and not vocal about his meals.

We also tried a small dose of insulin this morning with his breakfast and he doesn't seem to be feeling well from it....we are scheduled for the enzyme blood test tomorrow, a CBC, a liver and kidney panel.

Our Vet seems at a loss as to what to do help him and I am the one pushing for the other blood tests---she said he is just not presenting with specifics for a certain disease. Kidney disease is next on the list since his eating has slowed over the weekend.

Any suggestions as to any other things to try/do for him??? I know we have alot of PS'rs with cat experience!

I feel so bad that he has gotten so skinny and not feeling well! We lost our dog to cancer in July, so cannot have another loss this year!!!

I don't have any ideas what may be wrong, but I just wanted to send you some hugs and kitty dust.

Thanks! We will take all the hugs and kitty dust we can get!!!

Sorry, no other thoughts. It sure sounds like a thyroid problem.

I know-crazy isn't it! She said that diabetes and thyroid are usually the only 2 diseases that they eat like crazy, but still lose weight!!! I think that is why she is at a loss!

Hi SCN, so sorry to hear your kitty is sick. :((
I called my sister (she's a veterinarian) and this is exactly what she said (she's really busy at work today so I did not get to have a long conversation with her regarding this but gave her the info you posted).

"Cat needs full bloodwork. CBC and chemistry. Needs good physical exam.

If all normal, consider Inflammatory Bowel Disease or GI Lymphoma -- may need GI biopsies."

So not sure that will help but I hope your darling kitty starts feeling better soon and that it is nothing serious. Sending lots of kitty dust your way!

Wish I could help! I do know what anxiety you're going through, lost my dog to cancer in May & my cat died of heart disease in October. It's hell on wheels. Sounds like you're doing everything possible. Dust like crazy & big hugs to you & your kitty.

Awful losing one pet, but two is terrible! So sorry for your loss!!! Thanks for the hugs and dust!!!

Has your cat been tested for Cushings? Although it's more common in dogs, cats can get it too, and a ravenous appetite and drinking lots of water (like diabetes) are symptoms of Cushings. You might ask about it.

SCN- how is your kitty doing? I have been thinking of you and hoping things are improving!

Thanks for the suggestions and for checking in on us!

At this point we know our kitty has an infection somewhere(not urinary) is anemic and has glucose in his urine and continued to lose weight became lethargic and began to not want to eat. We are STILL waiting on the other blood tests to come back. But his Kidneys and Liver look great!

We started him on an antibiotic, digestive enzymes, 1/2 unit of insulin 2x/day and changed food again.

He began to perk up a little bit and has started to be interested in food somewhat again(he's not eating real great though)-the interest is a good thing for him since he is such a food hound!!! Not sure if he is gaining any weight back, but he doesn't seem to be losing anymore---haven't taken him back to be weighed since he gets upset being brought in-I am trying to wait to get the other test results back before taking him to the Vets again.

He looks a little better too-his eyes don't seem as sunken in and he is able to meow again, last week he would open his mouth to meow and nothing would come out---so sad!!!

I have been trying different canned foods for him, to try and get him interested in eating. I came across a company called Canine Caviar-it is a single protein, cold processed, grain free and with out fillers(I would have to order it in though)---has anyone tried it for their kitties, what did you think of it??? Woofmama???

Have you had the thyroid tested? That's the first thing that usually comes up when you describe the ravenous eating followed by rapid weight loss. (One of my cats went through this and now I have her on permanent thyroid meds. Her thyroid had gone completely bonkers.)

Good luck!!! I hate to hear that people fur babies are sick! It's so sad!

Yes-Thyroid and Fructosamine were the first 2 tests ran. Both came back at normal levels-thanks for the suggestion though!!!

Oh good! And good to know the kidney test was also clean. I felt so bad when I found out my cat had been having thyroid issues for several months before I took her in after she lost 3 lbs in a few weeks. Sounds like you've got a good vet to help you though.

This came up in the kitten thread about food and I thought it might be good to post here too. Royal Canin is a very good food (expensive) but all our cats are on the urinary tract version (because the boys HAVE to be) but everyone can eat it. I know they make varieties for sensitive stomachs. There are some varieties (like the urinary version) that are prescription only, but it couldn't hurt to check in to it and see what's available.

It is so hard not to blame ourselves when our animals are having issues we don't know about, isn't it! Wish they could just tell us!!!

Thanks we have tried Royal Canin in the past and he wouldn't eat it and neither would the rest of my furry crew, so unfortunately that is out. They are on Natural Instincts kibble(which they just get a few on top of the wet food for crunchies) and Wellness Grain free canned at the moment-but I have tried almost anything I can get my hands on for good food for him. He would really like fish flavors of canned food, but am really trying not to start him on those with his past urinary tract infection issues.

LOL- I totally understand. Fussy cat syndrome. Why can't they just EAT what I want them to that's good for them????

Wouldn't that be nice :) I try so hard to make sure they are all eating good food, but sometimes they just don't agree with me!

I hope the doctor arrives at the correct diagnosis soon and that the infection is easily treatable and that your kitty starts feeling all better very very soon!!!

I'm a veterinarian, and I worked in cat hospitals for years. These are solid recommendations!

I concur. My kitty had IBD and hyperthyroidism. They suspected GI Lymphoma as well, and in the end we believe that it was ultimately cancer that caused her death as a mass was found upon physical examination. I would definitely get a full workup done. And I will send over all the kitty dust the PSers gave to me these past 3 weeks. Big hugs to you. I know all too well what you're going through.

Thanks to all that continue to check in and send their well wishes!

He has had these tests:
Thyroid function tested=normal
Fructosamine=normal(although alittle higher than when it was last checked)
CBC-amenic and high WBC
Liver panel=good
Kidney panel=good
Pancreatic enzyme test=still waiting???
No masses
Weight lose, but has stabilized and possible gaining a little
Eating well now but not constantly wanting more food like previous to the weight loss
Digestion seems better, he is more active and his fur and eyes look better---so lets hope he is on the mend :)

I will mention both the IBD and lymphoma to the Vet again and she what she is thinking now.

Good news, Stepcutnut. Please keep the info coming as you know it. More dust for a full & happy recovery!

Glad to hear he is eating and hopefully gaining some weight. So, he's anemic and has a high WBC? Are they suspecting a UTI? What are they doing about the anemia? Did they start him on antibiotics? I will continue to keep him (and you) in my prayers.

Good to hear he is doing better. I hope the rest of his tests come back good!

Any updates on your kitty? How is he doing?

Thanks for checking in!

Still no other test results back-not really sure what is taking them so long other than the fact the Vet called the lab and they said that they had to send out to another lab for the tests---something smells fishy to me!!! I am thinking lost specimen!

Other than that, he still has cold ears and toes and he is not really gaining weight back(which he needs to do, at least 2-3lbs would be good)-but he seems much happier!

Eating better, coming up for pats and snuggles and he's been purring alot. Also has resumed bring us lots of toys as gifts :)

So, I will keep my fingers crossed that he is feeling better and will begin to gain some weight back---I ordered in some food that is suppose to be really calorie dense and easily digestible-hopefully he likes it and it does the trick.

That does seem like an awfully long time to get test results :nono:

I will keep him (and you) in my thoughts.

Finally got some more test results back and it looks like he is extremely B12 deficient.

So, we began B12 shots and his new food arrived and he loves it(I decided to try the Canine Caviar canned food), hopefully his tummy will too!!!

The funny thing is, is that yesterday before the Vet called I was sitting and thinking what else we could try with him and I thought---B12! I had the phone in my hand to call the Vet to talk about it and Voila-they called me with his test results.

At this point she doesn't think an intestinal biopsy is a good option with his current health and I agree-so we will assume he is having some malabsorption issues/inflammatory issues and treat him accordingly. I'm hoping that we will see good results and he gets healthy :)

Good news that he is eating well on the new food (but it is a feline food, right? Dog food isn't sufficient for cats). And B-12 is good - I have 2 of my cats on that too. Hopefully we'll see a good recovery!
