I recently saw what I thought was a reputable dealer offering an SI3 diamond. I thought an SI3 was the same as an I1. Was I mistaken, or is this dealer a bit shady?

SI3 is a reputable home for a low SI2, or a nice I 1.

The trade has always paid a premium for nice I1's, and the grade is aknowledgement of reality.

That said, I do not offer SI3 in my store.

A diamond dealer who really thought he owned an SI2 would much rather have a GIA graded SI2 than a GIA graded I1. What Garry has said above is true to an extent. You have to figure that logically the majority of EGL SI3 stones were ones that would grade GIA I1....Possibly they are very good I1's, but I1 nevertheless.

I have seen some SI3 stones that were very pretty and nice to own. I can't recall one that I would have graded GIA SI2, but it could happen in theory.
