What is everyone''s general feeling on SI2 stones with good color (D or E) will i be able to see inclusions to the naked eye, or is this a good quality stone.

Depends on your vision, the type and location of the inclusions, and the type of cut of the stone (inclusions are easier to spot in an emerald cut than a round brilliant, for example). I think it's a stone by stone call if you are going to go with S12.

The better the Cut of the diamond, the less likely
you will be able to see SI inclusions.
In ideal round brilliants, this is certainly the case.
In fancy shapes, there are no hard and fast rules
as far as numbers are concerned and it is probably beneficial
to have use of additional measurement tools in
order to make a good evaluation.

You can expect to see the inclusions in an SI2.
You are not supposed to be able to see them in SI1 or VS2 but that is not always the case.

We haven't run across an SI-2 that we consider to be "truly" eye clean... Some are better than others, but there can be a lot going on inside of them, it is a pretty broad grade... If you're considering buying an SI-2 clarity diamond from an on-line dealer, we definitely recommend getting detailed clarity photographs first so that you have an idea of what to expect when you loupe the stone.

Doesn't this also have to do with the size of the stone?

Hi, DiamondSeeker: Caratz is right on the money.....SI2 covers quite a broad range, so it is important to let your eyes be the final judge.

Here's why it's so hard to make a definitive statement: not all SI2 stones are created equal. Some inclusions are white and not that noticeable, while others are black and very noticeable. Some SI2s have inclusions that are located around the edges and aren't very noticeable once set, and some have great big clouds right in the middle of the table!

The SI2 is also somewhat size-dependent, too.....it's less prominent in a smaller stone, and more prominent in a larger stone. It's important to note, also, that an SI2 stone doesn't have to be a D or an E to raise it to the level of a "quality" stone.

Bottom line: it would be a mistake to dismiss all SI2 stones because you may be passing up a beautiful stone. But it is important to clarify with your vendor that the SI2 stone is eye clean or to get detailed info about the nature/placement of the inclusions, and above all to view the stone yourself.

Good luck with your potential purchase.
