What a great resource this forum has been for me and has saved me from making a horrible mistake. (Shane Co)nuff said right, lol I walked out after the sales person said it was "well" cut when I asked the cut grade.

Anyway I have looked at hundreds of stones this last month trying to find the most bang for my buck. I have decided that I need Ideal cut that scores under 2 on the HCA with <H color and over 1 ct. My budget for the stone is $5k ish for the stone and that seems to puts me into the SI2 range on the sites i am looking.

I guess my problem is that I have looked at so many and been back and forth that I no longer trust myself. The linked stone below is the one I am stuck on as it seems to meet all my specs yet as a newbie I would hate to make a error. What do you all think? is this all that I think it is or does the SI2 grade make it something I should pass on?

I have an SI2 from Brian and it is great. The SI2 you are considering is better than mine, the inclusions seem to be all white ones and spread out. You need to call and have an honest conversation with Brian about what you want in terms of eye clean for your diamond. Many or maybe most SI2s have inclusions that you can see in some lighting if you really hunt for them. Will this bother you? Or the person who will wear the diamond?

But if I were buying an SI2 from anyone, BGD is a place I would trust.

Does your gf have a preference about her diamond? Does she know anything about diamonds? In truth, the vast majority of diamond sold are SI2 and below, anyways, and with poor cut to boot

The diamond looks great, definitely check with Brian or Lesley if it is eyeclean to your standards, they will be completely honest with you.

Thank you I have spoken to them and they say its eye clean. I am just torn with thinking she would want a little bigger, this one is a 1.108 but I am not sure if going to a 1.25 would be worth it given she has a size 3 finger anyway and I would have to come down on the specs to stay in budget.

Well there would be some slight size difference, maybe speak to Brian or Lesley to see what they have in a larger size? 1.10 carats will face up roughly 6.6mm and 1.25 around 6.9mm as an approximate guide. Also it depends on whether your GF might appreciate knowing she has a larger size diamond, if you think she might definitely prefer to go a little larger then see what BGD can suggest.

Well the only way to make that jumps is to up the budget or drop color, and I would not recommend the latter for such a small increase in size. For comparison sake, here is a 1.07 next to a 1.18, which is almost exactly the same comparison you are contemplating. Not that noticable is it

ETA The jump in price at the 1.2 mark is very large. My 1.2ct G SI2 cost about $6100.

Thanks Dreamer that helps understand the little size gain I would be looking at vs the price point. I think I am going with the 1.1 as its a great stone and the procescope price they are giving me is hard to pass on.

Now to the setting lol..

Beautiful SI2! On a size 3 finger that baby is gonna look like 2 cts! What are you thinking for the setting?

On another note- thanks so much for that [ic dreamer- I replaced my 1.07 stone with a 1.18- but the 1.07 was lost- I''ve always wondered how much bigger my 1.18 would look next to it.

I am considering the Peggy From Brian Gavin as it is the closest to the Verragio she liked when I took her looking. Might end up just going with a basic setting and letting her pick the setting just dont think she is going to want to take the ring off once I give it to her long enough to re set it..

I love the Peggy, but I think this one is almost as lovely for less money: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/home/ring-details/?product_id=5484 That is a good thing when you are on a budget. ETA And LOL, but the Peggy is nothing lilke that Verragio!

I like this one more. It's more delicate especially for a size 3. A 1 ct is going to look huge on a size 3 finger. I also like the idea of a plan setting with an upgrade down the road since you seem unclear on her style preference. Verragios are usually very ornate and antique-looking which the Peggy is not.

I think you guys just proved to me that I should go with letting her make the final setting call as clearly I don''t have the eye you do lol.... She is rather picky I know, after spending 2 hours looking at settings with her once before...

congrats on making the decision about the stone :) it''s a beautiful diamond - leaving the setting up to her might be your best bet !
