Calcite rough. I love this stuff. This piece is displaying some cool iridescence.

Tiny tourmaline crystals that didn't quite make it. Hanging out in their host rock. So darn cute!

Colorless Beryl from the US. Bought this stuff from some kind of governmental department at the Tucson Gem Show in 1991. The pale yellowish crystals in the middle are from Brazil.

Aw but try they did!

So neat to see this intermediate phase before they get chopped up and stuck on someone''s hand!

The blue one is very nice but rather small. Here is a purple spinel from the same locality, which is bigger. 6.22 ct.

These little pebbles are the only thing I have that could be called rough. I guess if the desire was really there they could be cut but they would all be very small finished peices. The largest crystal is only about 1.75 cts. They should be a pretty easy ID.

Cofor,
I'm not a fan of tanzanite but your little "pebble" has good colour and a very cute shape.

This large aquamarine crystal came from a private family collection in the Northwest Frontier Provinces, Pakistan. It was mined sometime in the 1970s. This area now is thought to harbor Osama Bin Laden, and is quite off limits to Western visitors.

Specimen grade crystals can have a nice shape, but are too heavily flawed to cut into gemstones. This crystal is 405 cts and is facet grade. I originally bought it to be cut, but decided that the crystal shape is too perfect to be reduced to cut gemstones. This is a difficult decision, since the value can be greatly increased when cut. This financial aspect is why large facet grade crystals are extremely rare.

The cut aquamarine is 20 cts for comparison.

Oh yum. For some reason I love that some spinel rough is alluvial. I like the idea of pulling pebbles from a stream and making gems. I know that''s a grossly fanciful interpretation of the situation, but still.

What a great thread, thanks to all the posters!
