They need re-stringing.
Probably UK freshwaters. Would not be Japanese akoya given when she received them

They weren’t a new gift, they were gifted down a generation on her wedding. I went to the Tower of London recently and read/heard in the crown jewel display that they were old, as in hundreds of years old. It stuck in my head as I don’t think of pearls as surviving in a wearable state (especially for a monarch) for that length of time! I’ve just quickly googled and it is apparently thought (if google is reliable!) that the pearls in the necklaces can traced back to the 1700s. I have no idea what that means in terms of where they may have originally grown!

The necklaces are generally worn together as a pair, resembling a double-stranded pearl necklace, but they are two distinct, separate pieces with individual clasps. The smaller necklace is the Queen Anne, which is strung with 46 pearls; the slightly longer Queen Caroline Necklace has 50 pearls. In Queen Victoria's 1896 jewelry inventory, the provenance of each necklace is given; the inventory notes that the smaller necklace belonged to Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch, and that the longer necklace belonged to Queen Caroline, the wife of King George II.

When I was choosing between 2 separate strands of Akoya or 1 strand of south sea pearl... the jewelry seller encourage me to take the south sea pearl as it can last for generations (if well taken care) where Akoya has more choices n availability in the market.

Maybe because they are worn is why they look so good
What a wonderful gift for the King to give his daughter and hair apparent

Did he go down and rummage through the vaults or did his mother Queen Mary point him or at least school him up in the right direction

i think - and i may be mistaken, but the Queen got her first pearls from her grandfather George V, to celebrate his silver jubilee
I saw a thing on the crown jewles and HM talking about them
there was this really really old incredibly valuable old pearl maybe belonging to Elizebth 1? and she seemed to feel sorry for it, not being warn, just hanging out on the crown (not the Queen's exact words)

I have tried to find out exactly what sort of pearls - I've even written to the Palace, but no-one seems to know.
Not akoya is a deduction given both when they were given and how long they have been worn daily. Must be all nacre, and there must be a great collection of British freshwater pearls in the royal stash.
The crown you are thinking of is the Imperial State Crown, which the queen wears to open Parliament. There are four very old pearls on it.But the tale that three belonged to Elizabeth l is not supported by any provenance.

The person who responded clearly didn't understand the question, let alone provide a reasonable answer, then, as I recall, I got busier with work. I could have approached the Crown Jewellers and asked them I suppose.

Typically weight is used as a measure when dealing at wholesale level, when dealing in volumes, and is the unstrung weight of the pearls.

The 8.27 Grams doesnt sound right, it’s very light, you should ask your vendor for more detail on what they are indicating with that number

I’m desperate for some really gorgeous pearls - but always get distracted by coloured stones.

My holy grail is conch pearl earrings. I’d love a string of antique / vintage graduated pearls too.

The only pearls I have are these cute baroque ones.

But check this out - it’s mind blowing. For $35,000!!!

Hi guys I’m new but I’m not new to the gem trade. I just love pearls and almost no one I know shares my love for them. Here is my newest buy. I also am looking for a dealer for fireball pearls because I want to make a necklace. these are my current collections 291416AA-7160-4A9F-A33F-2EBC38D49821.jpeg C2F305BD-A4B6-46A5-A510-03B9FA475327.jpeg 6FEB72B2-D48C-4D8D-8BAB-E3131EFEABCE.jpeg A517794C-2F3A-47F2-90EF-054F2E7E8253.jpeg

Looong time lurker, first time poster. Apologies in advance if I do this wrong!
Random item for my first post, but I just ❤️ them. I first received the pearls as studs and then had them reset a few years later.
15mm south sea pearls, set in 14k white gold with about 1.5ct of G-H VS2 diamonds. Settings custom made by my local jeweler - he’s a magician and very tolerant of my hair brained ideas :)

; they're so lustrous and beautiful. Sometimes pinkish sometimes creamy.
Unfortunately I don't like wearing pearls; so they just sit in the satin lined box.

What a stunning piece of jewellery, just beautiful

Just realised I have never posted in this thread for the years I have been on PS!

I took a photo of my largest strands using my phone yesterday, a silver strand of SSP purchased in HK in 2009 and a strand of baroque Tahitians from PP in 2007/8 during their massive Tahitian sale.

20201107_175759.jpg

I seldom wear them, or my other smaller strands nowadays. However, it makes happy just to see them from time to time - that's what my jewellery collection does to me!

DK :))
