just wondering, I have been noticing that I only see my round H&A diamond
sparkle when looking at it from the top. sounds like a dumb question but is
this normal? I thought I remembered another post where the person could see
flashes of color from the side (pavillion?). There have also been posts
where it''s said that their diamond sparkles even in the dark. Is that just
an exageration or what? I thought there needed to be some light in order to
see sparkles or flashes? I also notice that my diamond has great flashes but I only really see the "rainbow colors" when I am looking at it closely.
I hope everyone can understand what I am trying to say.
thanks for any input.

Well, I can only speak for myself but my FI's ring does have 3 H&A diamonds.

sounds like a dumb question but is this normal?

It may depend on the incident of light, that is, the angle at which light enters the diamond. Yes, all 3 of the H&A's seem to have much more sparkles when view head on, which is their nature. The center, however, appears to have an edge on producing sparkles at a more acute angle but this may or may not be a function of its larger size/spread or it being a Superbcert stone (the sides are generic H&As).

I believe this is called leakage, which all rounds will have with better cut diamonds theorectically having less than shallower/thicker cuts. It's hard for me to observe this since the basket setting obscures the pavilion view.

Seems like an exaggeration. In complete darkness, my FI's ring is completely dark and cannot be seen. There must be light for the stones to reflect light.

I also notice that my diamond has great flashes but I only really see the 'rainbow colors' when I am looking at it closely.

I hope that you mean "fire" when you say "rainbow color." Maybe it's the size of my FI's ring and the larger spread (the reason I went with a 3-stoner) compared to an equilavent carat solitaire, but I do notice flashes across the room with the 3-stoner. The flashes seem to be more pronounced with high-intensity light sources, especially from halogen lights, and when the ring is just cleaned (obviously). In a diffuse lighting such as white fluorescence, the "rainbows" are less noticeable.

My suggestion is if you really want to know if your H&A performs like other H&A's, go and compare your solitaire with other H&A diamonds in a local jeweler. You may end up being very pleased with your stone.

I have a regent and sometimes, especially in halogen lighting, I do notice fire when I look at the stone from the pavilion or the side. I have a simple 4 prong Stuller setting that allows me to practically view the whole stone. I cannot see anything when it is completely 100% dark but I do still see flashes of fire when there is minimal light. Maybe when the others say dark, they dont mean in complete total darkness.
