I was wondering if recutting this stone would be worth the time and money. I was also wondering if this stone is nice for its size.

Wow!

Why recut? It looks great face up... as much as the picture tells (which isn''t much, because of that glare).

Beautiful light red too. Where are these from? Are they treated? A four carat ruby must have a bit of a story

Thanks valeria101 for your reply. I bought this stone from an afghan gem seller in afghanistan during my deployment. The seller says it came out of a lot that got mixed. He says it either came from burma or the jegdalek mine in northern afghanistan. I had this stone checked in the states and I was told its unenhanced.

Hi Tim,

It''s not possible to tell much from a photograph. I''m wondering why you think the stone might need a recut. Is there something obvious to you that''s not apparent in the image? The table looks pretty scratched-up and I see light reflecting from what could be an internal fracture or inclusion in the upper left under the crown main facets. But both could just be reflection artifacts from imaging.

If the problems are external scratches only you could have it repolished very reasonably.

I don''t mean to throw a wet blanket on this but I would get that ruby checked by a gemologist. There are some bright round inclusions that I would like to see under a microscope or at least in a very good photo.

If that is a natural stone it is worth a lot of money. When you recut an expensive ruby you are throwing money down the drain. Yes it is posible to get more performance from that stone but at what cost?
