A little background history. I got engaged in 2000, I was still in college and my husband was freshly graduated but we splurged on a wonderful diamond. We spent $7000 on a GIA 1.02carat VVS1 F. However we spent about $300 on my setting with the idea that sometime in the future I would upgrade when we had more money.
Fast forward to here and now. I was shopping at the mall several weeks ago and on a total whim went into a jewelry store to browse. I hadn''t even given a thought before that day of rings at all, I''m not sure what drew me into the store as I''m an AVID mall shopper and had never bothered to look at rings these past 8 years. My eye was drawn to a unique setting, I tried it on and loved how it looked. I told myself to be good and made myself give it back, but an hour and multiple dressing rooms later I found myself back in the store buying a new setting for my diamond.
A couple of weeks ago my mom and I were at a different jewelry store at the mall looking at settings (she had decided she wanted to upgrade her setting after seeing mine) and the salesperson noticed my ring and asked if they could take a look at it. Of course my mom piped up I had just gotten it from their competitor just across from them, the sales person looked at it under her loop and said disapprovingly that my sidestones weren''t in that great of shape and they did a shoddy job of setting my diamond. I was missing a prong and instead of flattening out the prongs they should have been left more "ball" shaped. For reference, you can see the pictures at

So now my dilemma is what to do now? Do I return the setting? (They have a 60 day return policy) Do I trust them back with my ring to fix the setting? They told me I would have to wait until October at their next restyle event if I wanted to watch my ring be reset, or the ring would have to be sent to their repair center. (I had insisted that I get to watch the ring be set the first time, I''ve listened to too many horror stories of diamonds getting swapped and was paranoid lol.) I do still love the setting, but now I''m annoyed and the salesperson comments are nagging at me. Would it be possible to get the prongs fixed, and maybe upgrade the sidestones at a different jeweler?
I want to get my ring re-appraised since I''m guessing it''s actually underinsured by going off my old appraisal from 2000, but I''m torn on what to do as far as the setting now. Please help.
