Should I make my ring "perfect" and how?

A little background history. I got engaged in 2000, I was still in college and my husband was freshly graduated but we splurged on a wonderful diamond. We spent $7000 on a GIA 1.02carat VVS1 F. However we spent about $300 on my setting with the idea that sometime in the future I would upgrade when we had more money.

Fast forward to here and now. I was shopping at the mall several weeks ago and on a total whim went into a jewelry store to browse. I hadn''t even given a thought before that day of rings at all, I''m not sure what drew me into the store as I''m an AVID mall shopper and had never bothered to look at rings these past 8 years. My eye was drawn to a unique setting, I tried it on and loved how it looked. I told myself to be good and made myself give it back, but an hour and multiple dressing rooms later I found myself back in the store buying a new setting for my diamond.

A couple of weeks ago my mom and I were at a different jewelry store at the mall looking at settings (she had decided she wanted to upgrade her setting after seeing mine) and the salesperson noticed my ring and asked if they could take a look at it. Of course my mom piped up I had just gotten it from their competitor just across from them, the sales person looked at it under her loop and said disapprovingly that my sidestones weren''t in that great of shape and they did a shoddy job of setting my diamond. I was missing a prong and instead of flattening out the prongs they should have been left more "ball" shaped. For reference, you can see the pictures at

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-here-want-to-show-off-my-ring.91881/

So now my dilemma is what to do now? Do I return the setting? (They have a 60 day return policy) Do I trust them back with my ring to fix the setting? They told me I would have to wait until October at their next restyle event if I wanted to watch my ring be reset, or the ring would have to be sent to their repair center. (I had insisted that I get to watch the ring be set the first time, I''ve listened to too many horror stories of diamonds getting swapped and was paranoid lol.) I do still love the setting, but now I''m annoyed and the salesperson comments are nagging at me. Would it be possible to get the prongs fixed, and maybe upgrade the sidestones at a different jeweler?

I want to get my ring re-appraised since I''m guessing it''s actually underinsured by going off my old appraisal from 2000, but I''m torn on what to do as far as the setting now. Please help.

I can only say I'd be pretty disappointed with a jeweler that gave me a ring with a missing prong. It's the level of detail that they should have noticed and never let the customer see.

When did you notice the missing prong because it shows on the photos you posted. And what has your jeweler said about how they would fix it? A missing prong seems pretty serious but I am not expert.

It's a beautiful style. I like the setting very much.

They did a pretty crappy job setting it that is for sure. If it were me I would get my $ back and bring it to someone who knows what they are doing. You deserve better! Anyone that sets a stone that crappily I would not trust again.

There is a reason we call them "maul" stores here...

Hmm. Well. Honestly I think your setting is stunning and from the pics you posted nothing looks amiss. I would really chalk up the rude salesperson''s comments to bitterness that you went with a direct competitor. Until you walked into that store -- and having looked at your ring I am sure thousands of times -- did anything look troubling to you? Have you felt anything but love for it?

If you want to truly assess the setting perhaps go to an independent appraiser. What proof do you have, other than the opinion of a salesperson who DIDN''T sell it to you, that what they said was true?

I wouldn''t freak out just yet -- especially since you don''t seem to have had any issues before this salesperson stuck their nose where it didn''t belong.

Whoops, did I miss something? I can''t see the missing prong in the photos?

I'd probably either return it, or take it to another bench to get the prong fixed. I'd kinda worry about leaving it with a jeweler that screwed up enough to leave that bead or prong off in the first place.

I like the style of your ring quite a bit, it's gorgeous. But the quality / setting issues would probably bother me. I think if I were you, I'd probably look at pricing out a custom job to make a similar setting.

Now, keep in mind that I am *super super picky* about antique style rings and have looked at a TON of them, and scrutinize every last detail on them within an inch of it's life, so feel free to take my comments in that spirit. I don't think the millegrain is as fine on the setting as I prefer- it's about average, and I like the really finely done tiny tiny millegrain. Also the engraving is about average and I'm also very picky about that too.

I'm also wondering if your set is not rhodium plated? It looks like unplated 14K white gold in your pics; that is, it looks almost white but not quite, like more of an antique cream color. If it is, and not just a weird color reflecting on your setting, that would bug me a bit too.

That being said, your new wedding set's style is beautiful. It looks great on your hand! I hope you don't feel like I'm trying to bum you out more about your ring or anything; it genuinely is a beautiful one and I'm sure it looks even lovelier in person. And honestly depending on the price you paid, it might very well be worth keeping. I have several so-so quality super cheapie antique style settings (with worse workmanship than yours for sure!) that I have various fun gemstones in and wear regularly on my right hand... but personally for my e-ring I got really anal about the workmanship of the antique style setting I have.

If you do end up in the market for a custom similar set, I'd definitely recommend Greenlake Jewelers for something like this (gorgeous, gorgeous engraving!) or Singlestone. It might be a bit pricier than what you have now, but maybe not. Either place specializes in the super detailed engraved filigree settings like this.

Good luck

I can see where they missed the prong but that actually looks like it might be part of the design? If not, then I''d get my money back and get it set elsewhere.

It''s pretty, but GET YOUR MONEY BACK!!! There are so many great vendors who make great settings and would never miss such a huge detail like that. You have the pics, so you can show them the kind of thing you like and get something similar, but of great quality. I would not trust that same jeweler again! Your diamond deserves proper treatment

To answer some questions, I noticed the missing prong approximately 4-5 days after bringing it home. At first, I wasn''t sure if that was how the ring was "suppose" to be. I didnt have time to go back to the store right away to ask about it until that shopping trip with my mom. When I asked the store how it could be fixed, I would have to send it to their repair center, and it could be there for 2-4 weeks. If I wanted to wait and have it repaired in store I would need to wait until the end of October for their "restyle" event. (Of course, that would be after the 60 days so if they screw up again I won''t be able to return it.) Whenever I gaze at the ring on my finger I still absolutely love the way it looks. The custom made rings look intriguing but I don''t know if I want to spend more to have it made.

I say return it for a full refund and go custom to get something similar from a vendor you trust!

I love your setting but honestly a missing prong is a BIG DEAL! They knew it was missing. They knew they broke it off. So that raises a big flag about their setting skills. Then there is another big flag when they actually gave the ring to the customer knowing it was missing a prong. Your stone is worth way more than the setting so by not having a prong your stone was at risk. And finally I think adding a prong to a new setting is still coming up with a less than perfect piece and weakened prong.

I''m going back to Helzberg today and see about returning the ring vs them fixing it. I''ll report back with what I decide to do, thanks everybody for your input!

Definitely keep us posted! I have come to hate that store anyway! In my hunt for a stone-- before I found PS--- they were very pushy and tried to sell me a waaaay over-priced ring. My friend''s fiance bought her diamond there, and IMO, he overpaid as well. He bought under a half carat and paid over $3k for the ring even though he used her mom''s setting. $3k would be fine in a stone with exceptional quality, but just a short time after getting the ring, she found a very obvious crack in the stone that we could both feel with our fingernails. On one side of the crack the diamond looked normal, but on the other side, it turned bright white and opaque. They took it back to the store and were told "it''s not a crack, just an imperfection. When it''s clean you won''t see it, so we''ll just clean it for you." I have no idea what color her stone is-- she was told "white" by him who was told "white" by the store, and I''m telling you this stone could NOT be more than I1 or I2 clarity. You can buy a stone the same size as hers from Whiteflash with an amazing cut that is eye-clean and "eye-white" for around $1K.

Sorry for the thousand word story, I just really can''t stand stores like that. I know you just bought a setting, not a center stone, but it doesn''t surprise me that the sidestones may not be great. I hope they don''t give you any more trouble!

Keep us posted! The style of the setting is great but I think you could definitely get a better quality version of the same thing from a PS vendor. Good luck!

Yeah, definitely let us know how everything turns out. I would be quite reluctant to allow them to do anything else to my diamond. I bet that setting is not exclusive to Helzberg and you could find a better vendor to do the same ring, much better quality, same (less?) price.

Ok I know you guys are going to think I''m a big wuss.

I talked with them and decided to have the prong repaired and redo the rhodium. They were actually very nice during the conversation, and basically if after I get my ring back I was still unhappy I could still easily return the setting.

In the meanwhile, I have already started plotting out some settings for "just in case" I still wasn''t happy. Since doing custom settings seems to be so popular around here I''ve been giving it some serious thought. Browsing Whiteflash''s website their prices seem reasonable and within my budget. I would love to stick with the milgrain and engraving of my current ring, but I also love how their Allegro band looks with the split shank, as well as their halo bezel option. If I could figure out some way to do all 3 I think I''d be in setting heaven lol.

I hope they get it right for you this time! Keep us posted!

Ok so I''ve gone round and round and round about this. I found some examples of rings I liked, then asked for a quote from Whiteflash and the reply I got is definitely within my budget. I desperately want to give Whiteflash a call and give them the ok to start on a new ring for me, but I just have to see my old ring one more time before I make up my mind. I should be getting it back Friday and then I''ll wear it over the next week and try to make up my mind. Right now I''m leaning towards a custom round halo design, with channel set sidestones, and engraving similar to another member''s ring found here. I would also have milgraining. This would be similar to the ring I currently have, but I think it would be much better quality.

The main thing for me is durability. I''m fairly hard on my rings, which is why I finally decided against a micropave band even though I love the look of it. If I decide to have this ring made, the nice thing is I will get to continue to wear my original wedding band that my hubby placed on my finger. :) I''m still debating on which metal would be best for me. My wedding band is platinum, plus I hate the thought of having to get my ring re-plated every so often. What do you guys think so far?

If WF is within your budget I''d definitely lean that way!! They have such excellent workmanship. They would be great to ask about which metal would be right too. Perhaps palladium since it doesn''t need to be rhodium plated, but is cheaper than platinum? It will probably get scratched up and need polishing frequently though. No metal is perfect...

Well I got my ring back and have been wearing it over the last several days and I have to say I fell in love with it all over again, so I will be keeping my current setting. They retipped the prongs and replated the gold and I got so many compliments on it over the weekend that it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside lol. Thanks to everybody for your help, but unfortunately I''ve still been hit with the pricescope bug. (My husband wishes I had never found this site btw.) I''m on a new quest to find a pair of diamond stud earrings and a RHR lol.

I don''t think the pictures do it justice, it looks so much better in person imo.

Thanks for the update and the new pictures. Glad to see the prong is back and that you still love the setting.

Yeah, after I found PS I finally got a pair of diamond stud earrings that I''d wanted for years. I wasn''t willing to get maul studs, and hearts on fire were too expensive. PS showed me the way. My hubby wasn''t thrilled either, but I love my new studs.

Happy shopping and be sure to post pictures when you buy!
