I purchased a setting at a B&M and it is slated to be set with the 1.04 G VS2 AGS stone that I recent got from a PS vendor.

I had negotiated to have the setter onsite (Saturday''s only) so the stone would always be in my possession and I could see them set it for me.

Here is my dilemma:

It may be hard for me to carve out 90 minutes to secretly run to the mall without raised suspicion or come off like I am hiding something.

Option 1 - I could drop off the stone after work Friday and pick up the finished product on Saturday.
Option 2 - I could make up some lie and stick to the original plan and have the stone set in front of my eyes.

What would you do? Any tips on this process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

You are asking for a service under stressful conditions that many qualified craftspeople will not perform. Give the person who is providing the service for you a little bit of trust.
This isn''t somebody making you a double espresso frappe'' mocha, for gawd''s sake.
You have your purchase info from your diamond vendor, plots, grade, etc. What are your concerns?
You don''t hover over your mechanic when they''re servicing your car, do you? They won''t let you into their shop, and rightfully so.
I wouldn''t let you into mine so you could exercise your watchful eye, as I have stuff here YOU might make off with while I''m totally distracted kissing your

My goodness, Mr. Doctor! Enclosed is a free copy of "How to Win Friends and Influence People."

To the OP, I'm assuming your jeweler has been in business for a while and values his/her reputation. Jewelers set stones and repair expensive and sentimental items for people on a day-to-day basis, so they are aware of what a big deal this is to you. I understand why you'd want to see your stone being set, but it will be perfectly safe to leave the stone with them overnight to be set. A good jeweler will not be offended if you ask to see the stone in its setting under the microscope when you pick up the completed ring, so that you can check the diamond in the setting against its clarity plot. In fact, they will probably offer to show you the ring under the scope without you asking.

If it were me, I'd prefer to give the person setting my stone ample time to complete the job, and not feel rushed while he was doing the work. Good luck with your proposal!

Thanks for the responses.

I guess when I said I negotiated having the stone set when I bought the setting it sounded like I demanded it, when in fact it seemed to be the preference of the jeweler.

Yes, I do trust them, when I suggested leaving it overnight for them to set it he seemed surprised but said he could do either option - the choice was mine.

Option 1, leaving it overnight works best for me schedule and would raise fewer eyebrows for sure. Being a novice at this, I figured I would ask the experts BEFORE as opposed to hearing later from PS''rs "What? You didn''t get the setter to use the Kevlar lined tweezers while handling the stone?"

Thanks again for the help
