So after the advice of everyone, and after realizing she wanted a princess cut and not a round, I settled on a nice 1.2ct Princess from GoG.

Now for the ring...

Back when I took her looking last summer, I don''t think we ever saw or heard of a european type shank, so I have no idea how she feels about them. I however got to see one recently, and really liked the unique look of it. The only advice on it I got was from some slick salesperson though, so I don''t even know if it has any advantages other than just a unique look.

So what do you guys think? Should I play it safe and go round, or take a chance? Does the euro style help the ring from slipping from side to side, or does it create more corners to pinch skin on? Does it do neither?

Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

Oh yeah also for reference I am looking to get a ring and band custom made very similar to what scarlet16 has here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-plain-novo-band.85647/ with the no-cathedral, low setting and pave diamonds down the side.

I have tried on the european shank and was told that it keeps it from rolling, but I didn''t have it on long enough to notice. If you have a ring you like with a european shank then go ahead and buy it... I believe it can be shaved off if she doesn''t like it.

If you want a band/ring like Scarlet''s I wouldn''t get a euro shank. I think it ruins that type of design IMO. And I don''t think it really has any major advantages that makes it a "must have" unless you know she wants one.

I really don''t think a euroshank adds ''design advantage'', or gives it a better look - it''s basically to stop the ring spinning, especially if you have bigger knuckles than actual fingers and you need to size your ring larger to fit over your knuckles. Yes, it is a unique look but so a hinged shanks in my opinion - they serve a purpose, not improve the asethetics.

Maybe they just have lots of euroshank settings in stock and they wanted to sell you that one? I honestly wouldn''t go for one unless your girlfriend has specifially mentioned that she wants one, it''s a very different look. IMHO I wouldn''t want one.

I like the euroshank - as long as the head of the ring suits the design and it all "goes" - for example, Sholdt Designs.
If you''re unsure whether she''s keen on it or not, I wouldn''t get it - will be a personal taste for everyone.
