I have never shopped there before, but I am going to check them out. I know, they are overpriced etc. etc. Anyways, has anyone ever shopped there before and can confirm weather or not they haggle a bit with the price? Or are they the only store in the world where you have to pay whatever the price on the tag reads? I am just curious because I don''t want to get anymore ripped off than I already will be.

Any experiences there would really help out.

Thanks so much in advance!

They do not negotiate on price, ever.

Really? Dang.

If you look on this link:

http://www.tiffany.com/expertise/diamond/rings/engagement_fancy_ring.asp?ring=marquise&

It says ''Priced from approximately $4,690''

That doesn''t seem like a crazy price. Or am I really missing the boat as far as what most folks pay for rings?

PS- I really love this forum and have read hundreds of posts. Thank you all for your wonderful help!
So, would it seem like it was a ''crazy price'' if they were talking about $4690 for something like a .40c stone? Because chances are that is what they are talking about. It''s not like you are getting a 1c marquis for $4690. The markup is around 40% extra, if not more depending on what you get but I don''t think I have ever seen less...good luck!

It says priced from, meaning that's where the rings start at for that shape etc... Welcome to PS, sorry my manners must be slipping.

I have to tell you about a little experience I had last night......I just got engaged last weekend and my diamond and setting came from the Shane Company. Now I wasn''t a big fan of the store...until last night! I was at the mall with some friends, we went to Tiffany to try on diamond eternity bands.....my beautiful diamond didn''t look any different than the Tiffany diamond...and they were right next to each other! Amazing I tell you!

Now I don''t have a thing against good ''ole Tiffany or their little blue boxes......I''m just saying that I wear a diamond from the Shane company and side by side I could not tell one ounce of difference......

I know it depends on budgets, settings etc. But is there sort of an "acceptable range" when it comes to carat weight on an engagement ring center stone? Is .5 a little on the small end and 1 ct more normal? What weight do most people get?

There is no acceptable or normal range IMO. I have seen reports that say the average US e-ring is .50c and have seen .75c and also I read an article that said the average is 1.49c. So really I don''t think that there is any applicable AVERAGE...get what you want to get and that''s it!

.5ct is just as acceptable as a 1 carat and larger. It all comes down to what you can afford. Remember, Pricescope is not the real world in regards to average diamond size. I've only seen one 3 carat diamond and I live in SoCal!

Mara...there's no way the national average is 1.49ct! Maybe in Beverly Hills....

I think the actual US average is around .50-.75ct.

Depends where you live, what you can afford, whether you''re willing to go into debt etc. etc.
I know people who went overboard (three carats; junior doctor salary) while others played it safe (one carat; property developer).

Yes, welcome to PS. Tiffany is an outstanding company. They represent beautiful diamonds and fantastic quality. And shopping there is a very nice experience. That said, it''s not inexpensive at Tiffany, nor should it be. They have very high overhead, very expensive merchandise and the name has to be worth something. Now, you might think I bought from Tiffany but I didn''t. Not that I wouldn''t mind having something from Tiffany, but I bought from a high-end independent, where I could negotiate.

For someone who doesn''t want to spend their life learning about the 4C''s and who wants to walk right in and buy a diamond with fantastic characteristics and know they have a ring to be proud of and money is not really much of an issue, Tiffany is indeed a good place to shop.

Enjoy your shopping experience there. At least you will see what diamonds can and should look like compared to your average "Maul" store.

Best wishes..........

Keep in mind that many PS vendors have beautiful replicas of the "classic tiffany setting" if that''s what you''re looking for. If you''re looking for the name and the blue box, well, the store''s the way to go!

Where you live and what your social circle is like greatly determines what seems "normal" when it comes to e-rings.

Growing up in Virginia, I never saw anything over 1 carat. My mom''s was .72 ish ... my first sister got a 1 carat stone five years ago ... however, recently another sister (still in VA) got a 1.20 stone .. which falls into the "just over the average" there category and was quite a WOW for her & her friends when she got it.

In college & working in NYC... most of the gals I met came from the "Nothing under two will do" frame of thought. They''d NEVER think of marrying anyone not wealthy enough to provide that kind of e-ring.

When looking myself I was drawn to 1.5ct stones (larger size fingers + love of bling) though my stone is an Asscher which has the visual size of a 1 ct round ... which is the "top" of what I grew up around. Guess you default to what ya know!

What size stone does her mom have, her sisters, her friends ... these facts will help tell you where her "head is" and what her expectations might be. ALSO - do note that many, many folks around here didn''t get their "dream" size from the get go. They''ve "upgraded" over the years. Hope that helps ... rambly I know!

The only reason I am looking for a "name in a blue box" is NOT because I''m a trendy moron who doesn''t understand that they are building their reputation into the price, but it''s that my soon-to-be is a cosmetologist who enjoys and knows about fashion and the trendier things in life. So I just thought Tiffany''s would be a good thing for someone who would actually appreciate the branding aspect of the ring. But I was only looking at spending $5,000-$6,000 and I know she wants a white gold/plat setting with a marquise stone. So Tiffany''s may be out of my price range, I''m not sure.

I am a fashion savvy gal....I love spending on certain brands like LV and Juicy etc but I would not want a branded engagement ring. I think that alot of people would be like this as well but I don't know about your gal personally. I can appreciate the marketing message probably moreso than most because I did corporate marketing for 7 years, but I don't buy into it because of a brand name only but rather because I like the style of something or the colors or similar. So an enagement ring for me doesn't apply for branded because my tastes didn't run towards anything at the branded stores NOR did I want a smaller stone or ring because of a brand. But that is just me. So just two cents from someone who can appreciate branding and the value of something unique but only for certain things!! If you are not sure if your gal would DEFINITELY want a smaller Tiffany ring and you are thinking that just because she likes other brand names, I wouldn't take that leap without knowing for sure.

There''s nothing wrong with liking Tiffany jewelry....they have absolutely beautiful pieces. On a budget you''ll have to go smaller DUE to the name, but if she wants a ring from Tiffany then she should have a ring from Tiffany.

Or if you don''t like the Tiffany prices, go to signedpieces.com. They have several authentic Tiffany engagement rings at significant savings!

Silly question...but will 5-6k get a decent engagement ring at Tiffany''s? Or will that be lower than the majority of their rings?

Hi Navy;
They will def have diamonds in that range in the shape that you want. Go in and take a look, hopefully they will have some in stock to look at, if not they can have some brought into the store for you to look at. Then you can see if you are satisfied with the size of the stone ect. They dont charge anything for having the stones brought in so you wouldnt have to worry that it would cost you something. I hope that helps, take care and good luck

It'd definitely buy a decent engagement ring. Not a 1 carat diamond....but with 6k you might be able to swing a .50ct which is fine! Do you know what size your gf's fingers are? You posted a marquis earlier...do you know how your girlfriend feels about that shape?

She''s a 7 :)

Go there to look. Don''t buy.

It''s nice, but she already told me that she wants a marquise.
Well then...perfect!

Hey NavyMike!

Have you and your honey gone out together and tried on some rings?
If you have not, I strongly encourage you to.
Go out explore - experiment, and have some fun!
(... and stick around and do your research!)

(I sent you a PM)

Scintillating...

She told me that she wants me to surprise her with the ring whenever I get it.

Even if she is a trendy kind of girl, are you sure she wouldn''t like a bigger diamond? I mean big sparkly diamonds are what catch people''s eyes. More so than a smaller diamond that just happens to be a Tiffany. Not saying there is anything wrong with getting a smaller diamond, but the way you describe her, it seems she would rather have some bling to show off. I have a marquise myself and just love it. Marquises look big for their size which is a really nice feature of the cut. You could really get a ring that looked quite sizeable elsewhere.
