Shipping to Canada

I sold my Transitional diamond ring to someone on the boards on Friday, and then I ran into a major problem. I am in the USA and she is in Canada, I didn't think it was a big deal but now I am finding that I can not find a company that will insure it ! Fedex will only insure Jewelry upto $1000 unless you have a special contract with them. UPS will not insure it at all and USPS will only insure upto $2500 to Canada.

How in the world does anyone ship something to Canada if they are not a big vendor with a contract ?
I am upset and feel terrible that this may fall through. DH had the fedex label and package all ready to go on friday and called fedex to make sure we had the customs right and they informed him that insurance would not cover more than $1000 for jewelry.

I am looking for options, fast options.

Jewels by Erica Grace (seattle) is going to be sending me a stone very soon (pending wire transfer) - the shipping plus insurance will be $75. I'm not sure who the carrier is but I'll try to find out for you...fast!

ETA: To be clear, I'm in Canada, they're in Seattle.

because they are a jewelry business they probably have one of the contracts that was mentioned to me that allows insurance.... brinks only works with business' as well i called them this afternoon

Where are they in Canada? If close by the boarder, just ship it to a US address and they can drive over and get it. Declaring it at the border is very simple for Toronto / Niagara Falls.

If I'm not mistaken, if you currently have the piece of jewelry in question insured under a homeowners or separate policy, they (the insurance company) may cover the piece during transit. You will have to call them up or look through your policy to see if they do. This is useful for when lets say when you're sending a "ring" to get re-sized or repaired.

If you have a relationship with a vendor in the States who uses a service such as Parcel Pro for their insurance, offer to pay them to ship it for you. Expect to pay their actual cost which can be $60 to $80 depending on the insurance plus a reasonable fee for them to handle this for you, such as $50 to $100.

Using a service like Parcel Pro is wonderful since they will send by either Fedex or UPS and they will handle the customs for you.

In several years of using Parcel Pro/Fedex, I have had one or two delays, but never a loss with International shipping.

Yes I'd look into just getting a separate insurance rider on it. That would probably be the easiest way I think.
