Hi All!

I have (finally :))) decided to embark on the super-ideals journey... Very excited!! Looking at some CBI options in the 0.50ct range . It will need to be sent to Dubai and I'd really appreciate if there's someone on this forum with a recent experience who'd be able to share it. @BlingObsession - I remember you mentioned in one of your responses that it is 10% in total (5% VAT + 5% import tax) - was that it? I assume it was this year, since VAT was applicable? Any other charges that popped up on the bill (sometimes I find they are not very consistent with what they charge in duties on apparel but it might be just me being confused)? Would be really grateful for an advice. I'll be contacting the customs office down here but they are closed for a long holiday and I've got that itch... you know  Thanks a lot in advance!

Best,
Katya

Does the customs office have a website?

The UK has the HMRC website (IIRC) that details all the import taxes.

They do have a website but no details on import taxes (not that I could find, at least). Btw, it will be a loose diamond - not sure if it makes a difference but just in case

Hi @Katya DXB

The charges by Fedex are fairly inconsistent. There is usually a handling fee of around AED150 - give or take - plus the import duty and VAT based on the declared value of the contents and the shipping fee. Import duty is not always charged but VAT is nowadays. As I said - inconsistent! If you allowed 10% of declared value plus the handling fee charged by the courier, that would be the worst case scenario - in my experience. The process is slick and straight forward - only the charges are inconsistent. Oh - and don't expect a straight answer from Customs - honestly - you will get a different response each time.

Some vendors have arrangements whereby all these taxes are paid up front and you receive the package without any additional fees. Not sure if CBI do that or not. To be honest - it's not a biggy either way. Do check however that they will ship to Dubai. Some US companies will not. Weird cos those same companies will ship to Saudi Arabia but not here.

Once Fedex or DHL have the shipment on the delivery truck - they'll call you and tell you how much the tax is which you need to pay in cash when they deliver the package to you.

Good luck and let me know if there is anything else I can help with. Looking forward to seeing your diamond - it's gonna be gorgeous!

@BlingObsession - thanks a million!! Really, most helpful  CBI told me that would ship to Dubai, yippee (unless the value exceeds USD 5,000 in which case I'd have to get additional insurance. But I don't need to worry about this now lol ;)) Will check with them regarding the taxes. Would you also happen to know if they will deliver to a residential address without a PO Box?
And gain, thank you! =)2

I think you would get the most accurate answer from CBI ;))

Actually delivering to a residential address on international shipments may require consent of the shipper and delivery company both.

I think some vendors prefer to ship internationally to a secured holding point. My guess is it has to do with insurance policies and red tape.

FedEx will not deliver to a P.O. Box. We prefer to ship to a secure FedEx location as it is normally more convenient than having to wait at home. You will need to be at home to sign for your package.

It is important to know that the shipping limit, like taxes, varies for each country.

In Dubai shipping to a residential address or office address is the norm. You don’t want them to ship to a ‘FedEx secure location’ like they do in the USA - it is a right royal pain in the butt to get it released. They will not leave the package with anyone without an Emirates ID being presented and the fees paid. It is really simple and uncomplicated I promise you. I do it all the time from low value to very expensive items.

Couriers cannot ship to a PO box anywhere in the world, as far as I am aware.

Let me know if there is anything else. You can reach out to me on Instagram (same user name) and we can chat if you like.

.... and as I said earlier, FedEx will call you to tell them how much you owe them and let you know when they are on their way. They usually give you a time frame too so you are not waiting around all day.

Also, you can track the shipment and once it clears the facility in Dubai, you can call them to find out the charges and estimated delivery schedule but I have found they are inconsistent with the fees they advise you - it is sometimes more and sometimes less when the courier actually gets to you. Gotta go with the flow.

I should have stated that we prefer to ship to a secure FedEx location or a business address. Thank you BlingObsession for bringing that to my mind. I was reading and sending from my phone while at the breakfast table.

I really should stop doing that... ;-)

Bah, the youth of today - so addicted to their phones that they check them the moment they wake up...

;))

LOL, I was a combat Marine in Vietnam, probably long before you were born. It is not just the young who are trapped into using those things far too often...
