She wants size, what should I be looking for.

If you are going to Boston, you might want to pop by Shreve, Crump and Low. They are a high end jeweler in the area, and carry a nice selection of fancy shapes in a range of sizes. (better than the Tiffany store here IMO)

A 1.5 carat in a halo will be a very nice size visually. Another option for lots of finger coverage would be a three stone ring with 1.5 carat center with two .50 carat side stones--however, not sure if she wants a ring like her mom's or not.

15k for an excellent diamond in the 1.5ct range is very doable. You can even stretch out bigger if you go lower in color. Once again it all depends on what your gf decides on. Definitely post back after she has been in a few stores and tried on a few different styles.

Just a side note but when picking out the ring look at wedding bands too. I had a friend who hated solitares but ended up going with it because she loved the look of it stacked with several eternity bands. So think about the whole picture.

I agree with a lot of the pp that say see what she likes on her hand. but id like to throw a marquise in the ring. I used to dislike them, but after seeing some really well made rings ive been easily swayed. And that you could probably get at a 2 ct. that would be VERY large.

I am in love with tacori e-rings grandmothers ring

I just wanted to update you guys. We just got back from our Bahamas trip and I wanted to update you guys.

We stopped by Diamonds International and were looking at their Fancy cut stones, after looking at princess, radiant, and Asscher she was sure that Asscher was her favorite. We were waiting for one of the employees to come back with a couple of stones in our prce range and she noticed another couple looking at a Round Brilliant. Despite swearing for months now that she didn't like round cut diamonds she decided to take a closer look at one. The employee showed her a 1.75 ct Ideal cut round and she was amazed by the sparkle. He then put it in a split shank setting and it was the first time I have seen her speechless in our search.

I do have one question. We looked at two round stones, one was a GIA and EGL Certified F color, the other was an EGL H color. Everything I have seen is that most people will see an H color as white. The F was gorgeous and white (as expected) the H looked off color to me immediately. The salesman told us that it was because we were just looking at an F stone (note that we were not looking at them side by side, a few minutes passed in between) and that the H would look white if we hadn't just seen and F. Is this the case?, or do H color stones look off color? or my assumption, was this H color EGL stone probably not a true H color stone?

It was because the EGL H was probably equivalent to GIA J or K. So if I were you, I'd stick with AGS/GIA H or above since you seem to be color sensitive. It is a really GREAT thing that she was able to see some diamonds and find out what she really liked. An asscher is polar opposite from a round, so it was important for her to compare them. Now your task will be much easier! Just start a new thread and people will be happy to help you find a ideal cut round and a split shank setting!

Yup, DS explained it well. And also did she seem to mind the color or was it just you? the easiest way to go bigger in size is to drop the color. It seems you are color sensative but would she care going down in color for something larger since she initally wanted something closer in the 3-4carat marker?
