Hello,
We did some shopping this morning to get a sense for stone size and settings. I''d been looking for Round brilliant stones last week since that is what I thought she liked most. Well, now she seems to be leaning towards getting a cushion cut with a delicate pave setting. Is there anybody that might be able to help me pick out a few nice ones? The cushions seems a lot less clear-cut (no pun intended) than picking out a round cut. Realistically we''re looking for an I or J colored stone that is around 1.5 carats or (ideally) higher. If someone could give a sense for what to look for, that would be most helpful. The cut advisor and cut grading seems to be completely out the window with the cushion cut.

THANKS!!

Ahhhh cushions -- mysterious devils! Mark Turanowski of Engagementringsdirect has a good rep around here for picking out winners (and he''s in NYC''s diamond district -- so can lay eyeballs on a ton easily ... unlike those who have to judge only by #s before calling a bunch in)

There are MANY MANY MANY threads on "what to look for in a cushion" ... just type "cushion" into the search bar & you''ll see.

Diff. people have diff. ideas but you can start getting a sense of the types you like so you know what to ask for ...

For example

Big, chunky facets -- OR-- tiny, crushed-ice Princess-like/Radiant-like facets

No culet (hole at the tip) --- OR -- small-to-large culet

There are so many different faceting patterns for cushions they''re impossible to judge by the #s only ... but #s can help weed out ones that fall far beyond the norm.

I''m sure some Cushion owners will weigh in & give more detailed help --- I''m just a cushion admirerer (sp??) HA!

As a recent cushion buyer and soon-to-be wearer, I want to echo everything decodelighted said. My BF and I went through Mark''s COO, Gary, at ERD and found exactly what we were looking for. I can also say that the following thread was a HUGE help to me when I started learning about cushions: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/cushion-question-for-cehrabehra-and-others.58597/

Good luck!

As someone who just want through the process, I will give you one piece of advice: Call Mark at ERD. You cannot pick a cushion online by the numbers and if you buy locally near you, you''ll most likely get screwed. They''re hard to pick and hard to buy, so call Mark.

3 recommendations for ERD. Wow. I will give him a ring on Monday. Fortunately, I live in the NY area which should make this a bit easier.

Just out of curiousity, in an apples to apples comparison, do Cushions tend to be more or less pricey than a Round cut? Or about the same...

Slighly less for the same size. But it's not considerable and cushions DO face up smaller so technically you would need to buy a bigger cushion to get the same face up size as a round, making the comparison mm by mm pretty much the same price.

Mark is fantastic and a really honest good guy. He'll be happy to educate you too, so make sure to ask him any questions you might have. Just tell him all of us from PS sent you.
