Share your most favorite piece of advice for life

When life gets tough and overwhelming I compartmentalize to get through each thing. For me, when multiple issues are happening simultaneously it's the only way I can deal with each separate issue. By compartmentalizing and taking it one thing at a time.

I could think of a few sayings, or instances of life that made me see things - but only one piece of advice & even that not quotable.

The footnote here is one such saying: 'let the good add up, and the bad wash off' - a sorting procedure resulting in a good life ,)

Don't read advice books :)

Put your mask on first...I say this to myself daily..
I have recently adopted this way of thinking after having my my mom who doesn’t appreciate me...live with me the last ten years...my adult autistic son who I love dearly but I have to use behavior mod every second I’m with him..and I get tired sometimes...and a grouchy adult son who is needy..and I was putting myself last...I realized I can’t help everyone if I don’t take care of myself first..which I have trouble with but I try.

This one is more and more applicable as I get older. We can't help others unless we are solid and stable ourselves. Two very different people have chanted this saying to me recently, must remember it.

Anyone who doesn't treat you well doesn't belong in your life.

Adding on to the married couple (or any successful relationship) theme...
"Do you want to be happy or do you want to be right?"

I love this one and I’m thankful I choose happiness every time.

Good times reading this! But - good advice: Be careful going down the rabbit-holes of good advice.

Pardon some language

This was in a book I read (The Rose and the Dagger, by Renée Ahdieh) I love the idea that all the growth and change we go through is part of becoming who we really are.

From my grandmother:

“An end with misery is better than misery without end.”

My Grannie told my communication and mutual respect is the key to a successful marriage.

Actually thats true in life.

The golden rule. Treat others they way younwant to be treated.

I've been following this thread and decided to send my daughter through a quote by Lady Gaga before she went for an interview for yet another position (she said she was answering all the questions fine but thought she was coming across a bit flat) as a full time English Lit. teacher at a secondary school: "stay grounded and bite it hard". She loved it and something worked as not more than an hour later she told me she had got the job. Big thanks to the wonderful Gaga.

Don’t marry a drunk. - My Dad
My Dad never weighs in on my personal life but after I’d spent three years with and got engaged to a self centered alcoholic that is the only advice he gave me. You can’t change people especially if they don’t want to change and his little bit of wisdom probably saved me years of heartbreak.

 Beauty doesn’t last forever. Don’t base your worth by how you look.

Do the things you want to do before you can’t.

This has been resonating with me for a while now.

Also: “if you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it”.
