Share advice! The best way to waste money is...

I hate the double standard regarding men's and women's dress codes (I'm a man btw, in case that wasn't already obvious).

I think that for guys, as long as we wear clothing that "fits in" with what the other guys in our workplace are wearing (meaning if other guys wear jeans/chinos and t-shirts/polo shirts, then we wear jeans/chino and t-shirts/polo shirts) then absolutely no-one would notice if we wore the EXACT SAME pair of jeans and t-shirt every single day. As long as you blend in with everyone else and don't smell, then no-one pays any mind beyond that, just like the male anchor in the news story showed. The only time people would probably notice what a guy is wearing is if his clothing was completely out of place for his environment, like if a wall street banker walked into his office wearing old jeans and a stained t-shirt, or if a construction worker walked onto a site wearing a $5000 Gucci suit and said "Give me that jackhammer."

Hopefully the double standard of women's clothing will begin to change in most workplaces soon, and women will also be able to wear whatever the heck they want. Because honestly, as long as you're clean and presentable, then why the f&$# should it matter what you wear everyday?

Great advice here so far. I agree that buying smaller/different things than what is really desired (specifically bling but could be cars, shoes, whatever) can end up being a waste. Saving for what’s really desired is better in the long run. Based you want is within reason of your individual circumstance, of course. I’ll never have the budgets some of the lovely members of PS have but I can still find things that make me happy.

Luckily for me, I’ve found that I actually love moissanite so I expanded my bling that way. And I tell people it’s not diamonds right away as I want others to know that beautiful bling is attainable. I do have some beautiful diamond and gemstone jewelry but I like lab-created and sweet little gold-filled necklaces just as much and mix it all together. I also like more affordable everyday cars better than luxury cars so yay for me. But - I had to buy a luxury one to know so that was $ wasted for me. Now drop a 911 in my driveway and I might have a different answer (I’m a woman who loves cars). o_O

I think knowing who we are as individuals and making choices based on we want not what others have is they key. I’ve always been mostly if my own mind but every once in a while I slip up.

And the work uniform for women-you all are saying my song! I have always thought it was ridiculous that women had to look different every day and men can wear the same thing every day. Now that I’m in my mid-40s, I tend to wear a variation of the same thing each day. A pair of comfortable black pants, comfortable black shoes, a black shirt and a colorful blazer. Once in a while I’ll switch it up, but that’s what I wear to work 95% of the time. Of course if you looked in my closet you think differently, because it’s jampacked with work clothes but never see the light of day.

All the above.

Plus - Buying a design you like the look of, but won't actually be wearable for your actual life. I think we can get caught up in the beauty and fail to be honest about how much we'd actually wear something. We keep wearing the more comfortable/familiar/appropriate items over the new hotness.

Yes, definitely agree here! It’s very easy to get swept up in the fun of it all, that we sometimes fail to predict how much “play time” that piece will get. Layla/Gypsy @LaylaR has helped me and others in that regard before!

We all have different budgets and lifestyles.

Realism, though.... that is a hard one for us fantastical types to reckon with. :Up_to_something:

Buying before you know what you really want. All the money I have wasted I could have had a huge diamond. Right now I have nothing but a couple of bands.

Trust me, I feel your pain!;-)

Sometimes what you want changes. Such is life. You can only make the best decision for yourself at that point in time. And of course the more know about a particular subject ie diamonds for example the better. But preferences can change. Don’t waste energy mourning your supposed mistakes. Instead buy with the best of your knowledge and wants and enjoy it for as long as you do. Live in the moment and cherish what you have and hold dear. But know it might not forever be that way. It’s ok. That is life. Material stuff is just that. Material and superficial. Enjoy it for what it is and try not to take “mistakes” you think you made to heart.

YES!! These two I am surely guilty of!! Glad that I am not the only one, LOL:P2

Hahaha no you’re not the only one. Not even close.:oops2:

Agreed! I suspect the news anchor world is somewhat of an outlier. And that unique colors/patterns are more memorable, unfortunately. I recently mentioned to a couple coworkers that I always rotate the same few outfits of my capsule/minimal wardrobe (granted, in suit territory), and no one had noticed.

:kiss2::kiss2:This is so sweet and so well said! Another reason that I love PS so much. It's a place where we can all come and be accepted regardless of our addictions to bling!=)2 Love the truth and honesty shared here! So many good peoples!! XXHUGS!!XX Love you all!

Buy costume jewelry to fill that expensive jewelry void and then buy expensive jewelry anyway.

Haha oh yes I have definitely DEFINITELY done this!!!

For me, not going for what you really want costs me more in the long run. Getting a substitute never works for me. That happens when I am impatient or trying to save money.

THIS like a thousand times. :naughty: I am the worst for it too! I try to get what I want on the cheap then end up unhappy anyway. *sigh*

Same can be said to job and life in general...:wall::wall::wall:
