What kind of setting would work best for a very cushiony (like my technical term?) OMC? I Really want just a plain solitaire for a RHR, the stone would be about a half carat.

My question is, what kind of setting would be best for that? 4 prong? 6 prong? no prong? Please help! I''m a little confused on which would protect/ fit an OMC the best.

I''ve decided I should probably collect every stone shape there is

For a squarish/rectangular stone, your options are a bezel or 4 prongs, or 8 prongs (double prongs). I don''t think I''ve ever seen a 6 prong square setting. A bezel is the best protection for the girdle. A low set stone is also safer than a high set ring.

Thanks! Now, where should I look for a setting? I like the 4 or 8 prong idea..

It's limitless! There's something modern, antique and everything in between.

Some go custom, some buy something already made/complete.
Some choose something out of a catalog (stuller, adwar), some browse ebay.

I would make sure that your girdle can stand a four prong. If it''s a thin or very thin, then 8 prong definitely.

Personally if you can do 4 prong, I adore this Vatche Caroline.

I love http://singlestone.com. A great place to get inspired!

I'm also a big fan of an omc in a millgrained bezel--a la Ericad.

You guys are fabulous. Thank you!

If I had an OMC that had that characteristic I would totally put it in an antique looking bezel setting. I love how some bezel settings bring out and highlight that "cushiony" part of some older stones.

Just wanted to add that if you were after a very vintage look, this was one I was considering if I ended up with an OMC (I went with a modern cushion instead so got a different setting) I thought the extra wide prong style would help protect the thinner girdle of an antique stone.......
