OK - I took the plunge and bought the rock......Denise over at WF was awesome in helping me out. My big issue was I wanted it to be a total surprise for my girlfriend - but I''m not confident in picking out the setting. Denise had a great idea to set the stone in a simple ''economical'' tiffany setting for the big question and from there we could go have it re-set together (awesome solution).

Anyways, my question is how confident should I be in local area jewlers when leaving them the rock for setting? Has anyone been given the switcheroo to a lesser quality rock when getting a stone set? I''m probably just paranoid but I''m just a bit nervous......any advice to ease my mind?

Thanks!

Isn't Denise the best?!?! To ease your mind, see if anyone you know is aware of a reputable jeweler. Or, have it set at WF--the peace of mind of having them set it is worth the shipping fee! That way if the stone gets chipped or damaged, WF will cover the cost whereas other companies probably will not. Where are you located? Maybe someone here can suggest a good jeweler in your area....

Well, I'm no help but I bet someone here will be! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Hi TRC,

I live in Michigan and I had my setting made by Maloof's Jewelry in St. Clair Shores. They have a ton of settings to choose from and they also do custom. Possibly you could buy your setting there and have WhiteFlash set it for you.

I had Maloof's make my setting and then had the jeweler that found my stone set it for me.

I can private mail you the name of the man I worked with, he was awesome!

Is Whiteflash sending you a toolkit with a loop along with your purchase? If so, get to "know" your stone so that you can find an identifying inclusion through the loop. It's harder with VS stones, but not impossible by any stretch. Maybe ask the jeweler who is going to set the stone to help you do this, as you are new at it. That way, he'll teach you, and know that you know how to check when you get it back. The people in the trade tell me that switching stones is really quite rare, but the occasional occurance makes everyone worried about it -- probably includeing jewelers who don't want to be falsely accused of it.

edited to add: You don't have to own a loop to do this -- you can ask to use theirs....

If its an ACA then it comes with a viewer and a loupe.
