Setting suggestions for a faint yellow 1.5ishct diamond in right hand ring?

Hi all, this is my first post in this forum - hope I'm in the right place! Just before the coronavirus, my grandmother told me she wants to give me her old engagement ring (round brilliant, around 1.25-1.5ish carats) and I have her blessing to do whatever I liked with it. I thought I would turn it into an everyday right hand ring. I am quite a blingy person and I love big over the top jewelry!

It is not a certified stone, and my guess (from memory, since the ring is lying at her bank in a different city - I wasn't able to take it from her before the situation went pear-shaped) is that it can be considered an alphabet yellow (X-Z). Its current setting is a simple yellow gold solitaire band, but the band is two sizes too small for me and two prongs are broken/chipped, so the ring will definitely have to be reset. It looks like a pale lemon-y yellow in the sunlight and indoors, never actually looking 'white' (and I'm quite color tolerant) - the whitest it looks is like a yellowish cream. It is quite sparkly however, so I think its cut well.

I don't want to keep the diamond as a single solitaire in a band - I'm a size ho (runs in the family!) and I want it to look very big and bold on my hand. I love the color of the stone though and I definitely want it to be a ring (I don't wear pendants and I already have nice studs, besides I feel like matching this stone will be difficult). However, I don't want to add other color stones to it either (since its yellowy, I would only add other yellow stones or white). I do want to wear it every day so it can't be a setting that is too high off the hand. The only thing I can think of right now is to either do 2 white side stones, or a halo/double halo in either intense yellow melee or white melee.

Suggestions are very welcome! I would love if you would weigh in on my two ideas, or give me some of your own.

I have a few ideas.. Assuming an older cut and vintage style for more halo options than ‘just’ melee.

Thank you for your ideas!! I love how varied they are!

I love the shield halo - that is gorgeous! And so is the target halo (though I might do a yellow diamond halo instead of the red). The bombe ring is also stunning though I wonder if it would look weird to have one yellow stone and the rest be white. It might be a good idea to save the bombe design for a different cocktail ring.

The toi et moi is also a great idea, but I don't know if I would wear that everyday. I do however like the idea for a future (perhaps semiprecious) cocktail ring project. I think toi et moi's with different colored/shaped stones look lovely!

Msops ring is the perfect example of a simple bezel halo. Her stone isn’t fancy but the bezel being a different color make the lower color diamond pop against the white halo setting. I would do this or some version of this. If you want it more crazy, have the stones get bigger at n/s to make it more of an oval shape.
But this is my go to if yo want something classic to make the color pop

Oh yes, this is PERFECT!

I was referring to Niel's suggestion, by the way! For some reason it didn't quote properly. This would be delicious with an alphabet yellow, especially if the underside was done in yellow gold to bring out the colour..

Oh this is a lovely ring! I do like the idea of the yellow bezel. How would this look with a yellow diamond halo, in your opinion - would that enhance the yellow color of the stone or work against it?

I definitely want to set the stone in yellow gold! I want to up the yellowness of the stone as much as possible. The contrast with white diamond stones might make it look more yellow as well... or do you think pairing it with a yellow diamond halo will make it look more yellow instead?

At the color you’re working with, I do not think a yellow diamond halo will make the center stone look more yellow compared to a white diamond halo. A lot of the reason this halo works is one- the bezel- two is the juxtaposition of stark white metal and diamonds. You want something that will make contrast - I think a yellow diamond halo in yellow metal will only bring attention to the fact the diamond isn’t as yellow as the halo.

That makes a lot of sense. I see what you mean by the contrast between the yellow diamond melee and my yellowish diamond will probably make my yellowish diamond look whiter, but not in a good way. It’s definitely something to consider and will probably have to be judged by eye! Thank you for your help :)

I second this suggestion. I think this would be amazing

Take a look at Diamonds by Lauren.

They specialize in colored diamonds and have lots of low alphabet colors. You can see how they have set some of theirs. It may help.

Yes. Agree. I have a light yellow low alphabet and I have white diamond accents. I don't think I'd like yellow accents.

Thank you for your suggestion! I'll check out Diamonds by Lauren to get some ideas. Its definitely helpful to hear that you think white diamonds complement your alphabet yellow more than fancy yellows would!

Thanks! I listed it for a minute on Loupe Troup when we had a very high closing cost estimate about 2 months ago. My husband told me to take it down. He was right. This one stays. It's one of my favorites.

I'm so glad you changed your mind! I hope to have one with a colored stone center one day :)

Here is mine. The colorless stones work great.

This is BEAUTIFUL! I love it!! I never considered going for like a “flower” shape (I know it’s not really a flower but I didn’t know how to describe it better) but it looks so stunning on your hand I need to add this to my list of “possibles”.

I checked out DbL like you suggested by the way and I saw some settings I just loved. Some had FY stones surrounding the alphabet yellow center and some didn’t. I found myself liking aspects of both so maybe I will need to explore a bit more...

In that color range do you think it should be graded in case it slips over into FY territory? It wouldn't be the first time it's happened. ;)

I considered it, I’ll be honest, but I also know that I don’t plan to ever sell it, because of my sentimental attachment to the thing, so it’s probably not worth the effort of sending it off to be evaluated. I am curious to see how much of the effect of the color comes from the yellow gold setting, so once it’s out of the ring I will probably put it against some pure white paper and try my own hand at grading it from both the top and the bottom; as well as ask the jeweler to take a crack at it!

I understand as I did not send my MIL's diamond for the same reason. But would the difference between an X,Y,Z and FY be worth for evaluating insurance needs?

You raise a valid point... this ring is so far not insured, so it’s never come up. I might ask the jeweler for his opinion on whether it would come up alphabet or fancy and if it’s worth grading or not.
