Setting/stone question

Hello,

I have just begun shopping for a stone for an engagement ring, and I plan to get one online. This forum/site has been a great help. However, I want to do it as a surprise, but i think she should be involved somehow.

I would like to get a stone in a temporary, cheap (~$100) setting, as something to give, then have her pick the real setting at a local shop, or have a jewelry maker do it, whatever.

Is this possible, and has anyone tried this?

any jeweler can put the stone in a basic ''tiffany style'' mounting for you - can be temporary or not, but all jewelers have these basic settings available.

ditto, just stick with Whitegold or yellowgold. platinum will cause the price to jump.

I just purchased a diamond and a simple 4 prong setting from Whiteflash over the holidays. It is lovely.

You can definitely inquire with them if there is a Pricescope discount or bank wire tsf price. That may bring down the price for you ...

Blue Nile will not just sell the setting, you would have to get the diamond from them as well

.

In 14K gold, the Whiteflash setting is $195. You could always inquire about a discount to bring a few more $$ off.
