OK, I''ve been lurking here for awhile, but I''ve yet to see this topic covered in entirety.

In my search for a special ring, I''ve seen thousands of settings in a variety of styles and metals. What online resources exist to view a variety of setting and heads with the description and name? I know the difference between a prong and a bezel, and the other few more common types. But now and then, I see "rosebud mount" or "grill setting" and have no idea what they are or how they differ from others.

Specifically, I''m looking for a ''head'' that gives the illusion from above that a round stone actually shaped more like an octagon--more curvaceous. Does this make sense to any of you experts out there? Without actually being a bezel or an octagon shaped halo. It would be a claw with only bits of metal showing from the top. Do i have you thoroughly confused yet?

Also, in the sprit of curiosity, if some of you could post pix of some of the more unusual settings, that would be fantastic--with names, of course!

Aside browsing jewelry shops and websites and remembering the names... there isn't any better "jewelry dictionary" I know of.

What you describe might be a version of the "belcher" setting. Like THIS.

"Rosebud" and "Grid" might just be commercial names used by a particular shop. This is the first time I hear them... unless by "grid" you mean the cover of a Pasha watch (and that's still just used for that object, not a type).
