I need some advice here. I am about to order a platinum setting for an engagement ring; it has pear shaped side stones (totalling .40) for a center stone which is round 1.17 ct. I have mostly seen this setting with four prongs, but the one I saw in person today is a 6 prong setting. The best way I can desrcibe it is it looks like the vatche with pear shaped sides except it has the 6 prong center. I can have the head changed but I wanted to get some feedback from here. Do you think I should have four prong instead of six in this setting? I was able to view this with a diamond already set in the 6 prong and I liked it. The only thing is of course it is higher than if it was four prong, as that would lower the center stone a bit. Help...this setting business is driving me nuts!

I know it's a silly thing to say, but whichever you like better is best.

Me, I would prefer the diamond to be set lower, but I'm pretty insistant about that... my little pet peeve.

Thanks...I guess I'm just worried that though I like it visually, it throws off the whole ring because it's a traditional 6 prong peg in the center for the stone. The other settings I see like this are all flussh; pear, center, pear....this one the attention is drawn to the center; which I guess is good since that is the showstopper!

IMO the six prong is better because your diamond will be more secure. My mom has had two of her prongs break over the years (platinum) because she snags it on things, and once almost lost her stone. She originally only had four prongs, but decided that six would be better because of the breakage. Just something to consider!
