We finally found a diamond that makes my GF happy (1.15 H VS1 OEC) so now am am starting the setting design. She picked the stone and I am designing the setting with some input about what she likes.
I want a reverse tapered style setting to highlight the center stone and am thinking of using purple sapphire pears with the points in as side stones and possible a couple small diamonds outside the sapphires to create a pave half shank. I want a fairly delicate look and with 2mm or so sidestone diameter as the center measures a little over 6.5mm. I have not seen any rings with pears in this orientation so I wanted to check if I am missing an obvious problem. The jeweler thinks it will be fine.
I also want to use a 6-prong head for safety and a rounder stone appearance, it sounds like have EW prongs is safer, and I like that look in a solitaire but I don't know how it will look with the reverse taper ending in a prong, does anyone have pictures of something like that? The side view will be a trellis/filigree type approach which would work well with only 2 side prongs and continue the delicate theme.
I would love to see more pictures using elements like these to help my design as well as hear any potential concerns.
thanks

Well, in my mind the pointed end of a pear draws my eye to the rounded end of the pear
Which would be away from your center stone. I'm picturing what you are saying but it doesn't
Seem to be very pleasing (in my mind) . Do you have any drawings or CADS you can post?
That may help change my mind.

I'm going to go search for something like you may be talking about but not sure if ill find anything.

Yes, your pear orientation is outside the norm, but interestingly when I was talking about a 3-stone round/pear ring design with my DH, he also preferred a design with the pear points closest to the center stone - he said that way emphasizes the center stone and makes it look larger. My DH works in custom marble and tile, and many of his projects involve intricate designs... I have learned to trust his eye and design sense - I have come to think that if the pears are small enough, this orientation could look beautiful and complement the center stone - it is all a question of scale. We were talking an all-diamond design, but I don't see why it wouldn't translate to a diamond/sapphire combo.

I look forward to seeing how your project progresses - I do hope you will be working with a jeweler designer skilled in CAD drawing/production - as great as it is that you are taking a hand in the design, I think only a skilled jeweler will be able to successfully combine your elements into a graceful yet secure ring.

Thanks for the responses. I agree that with large pears this would look off, but I am thinking using small pears to add an inner point to a reverse taper pave so it looks good in my head. I am working with Green Lake Jewelry and should be moving to the CAD phase after the major design elements are decided. I will be interested to see the models and can post them when I get them.

So the look I am thinking of is like the one from brian gavin http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/e...tones/4-prong-sleek-micro-pave-platinum-5472p

In my design the pave diamonds closest to the center stone will be replaced with the purple pea sapphires to add a uniue touch of color while still keeping focus on the center stone. I also want to add a trellis style 6 prong mount with 2 prongs inline with the ring (EW) not sure exactly how this is going to work, it might take a few CAD revisions.
