I think I''m finally ready to put my 1.05 ct OEC into its permanent home. To put it lightly, this has been a really tough (year long) decision for me. I have come to the conclusion that I really love the three stone look with pear side-stones.

I''ve spoken to a couple of vendors about this design and one very respected vendor has said that the sides-stones should be recut into the old faceting style for this ring. Well, now that leads me to a few questions...

First, I have never seen an old faceted pear stone, are they beautiful? Do they "behave" like my OEC? Any thoughts?

Second, do you think is it really necessary to have these stones recut? They will probably be rather small to compliment my stone, will it make that much of a difference if they are modern cut?

I think old cut pears as side stones would be AMAZING!!!

If you look in the timeless classics, I posted a pic of an old cut marquise that was on ebay for Tacori e-ring, I imagine the pear would be somewhat similar

Bella,
Can you point us to any old cut pears? I dont think I have ever seen any and would love to see one if you have a link.

Thanks,
tyty

tyty, if you google it you can see some. I think most are on sites that can''t link to PS...

I think I can link this one:http://antiquediamond.org/files/Necklaces-Indiv-MerchPages/IndivMerch-Necklaces-Bird.html

House Cat -

I recently received my James Meyer ring that looks like the one you originally posted with the side rubies. Center stone is .91 rb, side oval rubies total .94
Love the low profile, very comfortable to wear. There is a thread about it i nSMTR

House Cat, I think that using old cut pears would be AMAZING! While I do not have any examples and photos to share, I have seen them and always had a soft spot for them. They have small tables, a culet, and chunky faceting. To find a pair that would be an exact fit to your center stone is going to be challenging, but we have had a newly cut pear recut into an old cut style before and I adored it.

Good luck - cant wait to see what you decide!

I really think old cut pear side would really make this ring. I''m sure modern pears would look nice but old cut pear would be really RIGHT next to an OEC. DO IT! (then come and show us!)

Might be a dumb question but what is an OEC?

Exactly, R-O-L (how are you?)!!

I would be tempted to get the pears recut to antique style if I were you, since it''s been a long time in the planning and you want it just right. However is there any way you could see at least one pear with a modern cut in about the size you want next to your OEC? I am having a hard time picturing it myself, actually... it could be just fine to your eye in person, which is really all that matters!

Sounds like it''ll be lovely either way!

Old European Cut

I went to a local jeweler to see if modern pears would be acceptable next to my OEC, they didn''t quite work. Every jeweler I have spoken to has told me that finding matching old mine pears is extremely difficult. My only option is to do a recut. Unfortunately, recutting such small stones isn''t really a cost effective idea.

I would do it if my stone were really large and the pears were larger, but it just doesn''t seem like a wise decision to pay the cost for recutting for this type of project.

So, back to the drawing board. I''m not sure what I''m doing. My wedding is in one month. I''m actually eyeing another diamond or considering setting my current diamond, it''s all up in the air, and I really need to make a decision now. I''m not very good with the decision making.

@ myself.

I''m sorry the old cut pears might not be a reasonable option for you

They would have looked so lovely!

I''m sorry you''re having such a tough time decising - I know what that''s like - it''s tough when there are so many beautiful options out there!

Housecat, I feel your pain. I agonized over resetting my larger OEC for a year before I just stumbled across an antique setting that worked on eBay. If I was going for a modern reset of an OEC I''d definitely go with Greenlake Jewelers- or Van Craeynest if I could bring myself to spend as much on the setting as the diamond (yikes!) But that''s just me

Good luck. Have you gotten quotes on the recutting of pears? I suppose there''s a chance it might be a pleasant surprise...
