Setting high versus low

It seems that many PSers who get a custom setting mention that they request the stone to be set very low. What's the objective behind this? I can see the advantage that you would probably knock the ring into things less often, particularly if you have a very active lifestyle. Is there another advantage? Does it make the stone appear larger or smaller to set low? Is it more flattering to the finger to set it one way or another?
It seems like setting high would make the stone look larger, plus allow for a flush fit band, if that's desired. Are there people that favor a higher setting and request this?

We get requests for the diamonds to be set both ways. Like many things, it is a matter of taste.

As a practical thing, low set diamonds are less likely to be struck, but some of the taller settings are quite exquisite.

Hi - to echo Wink above, it really is a personal aesthetic/lifestyle decision.
For example, if you're a dentist (and don't want to keep your ring off all day), you'll need to have a setting that is quite low and won't puncture rubber gloves...or patients lips... ;-)
Another thing to consider - there can sometimes be an issue with some lower settings sitting flush with wedding bands - I always recommend to anyone thinking about their engagement ring (high or low setting), to factor in the wedder at the time the ER is designed/built/bought - even if not purchased together, just so that there are fewer issues when you are ready for the wedding ring.
Hope this helps

Low set is more practical for:
1. Less spinning because the ring is not as top heavy
2. Less likely to get caught in gloves, pockets, etc and less likely for the diamond to get damaged/chipped
3. Less likely to scratch children and spouse

High set has its benefits too:
1. Makes the stone look larger
2. More light gets in from the sides, so it can appear more sparkly
3. Allows the w-band to sit flush with the e-ring.
