Hi everyone,

I have been lurking on this forum for a while (and completely ignoring my "real" job) and have learned so much. I just got engaged (on top of the Eiffel tower of all places!) and have been ring shopping...no, ring researching. I found a couple of stones and am not sure which is the better one to go with. While neither are "Asschers" by brand, both fit the profile of what I''ve read about Asschers. One is a square emerald and the other is a cut corner square step cut (I was all set to go with the former but I stumbled across the latter yesterday and am now trying to figure out which is better...without seeing them side by side).

My big question regards settings. I like things that are simple, classic, and elegant. Nothing frilly here (and yes, some call it boring, but "classic" sounds so much nicer

I have seen a lot of pictures of just the ring but I find it impossible to tell without seeing it on a hand, preferably mine but I don''t think that''s going to happen.

So, does anyone have thoughts on asschers with either a) tapered baguettes, b) step cut trapezoids, c) both baguettes and trapezoids, or d) just solitaire (maybe an x-prong or I like the sholdt solitaire design (from what little I know)). Again, something very simple, no prongs sticking out, fluid lines, etc

I will try attach some pictures, a few of which I am sure I got from this site (if I can figure out how). They are someone else''s gorgeous ring, no copyright infringement here!

Does this make sense? Does anyone have advice or pictures?

(I should add that I am looking for white gold and the stone is about .90 - 1.00 carat and my finger is about a size 4.5).

Everyone has such amazing knowledge here and I would really appreciate anyone''s opinion. Also, if you have thoughts on how to choose between the two stones, I''m totally stuck on that too!!

thank you so much! Cheers to all

(couldn''t figure out how to attach more than one pic...I''ll keep trying...sorry)

I don''t think your setting preferences are boring! I also think that they are simple, classic, elegant.

Any of them could look nice, it''s really just a matter of what you like, and what you think best fits the stone you end up with. And the same goes for the stone, pick what you find most pleasing!

I love the picture you posted and love the idea of trapezoids. I''m not sure what traps and baguettes
would look like. Got any pics of settings like that?

I think classic is beautiful!

dimendscaasi.com has a setting for an asscher that has step-cut traps next to the asscher, and then tapered baguettes next to the traps. It''s stunning, and probably my favorite setting for an asscher - you should check it out.

Congrats on the engagement! I am an asscher owner (and was also proposed to on top of the ET!) and while I love my current setting, if I ever had to reset, I think this would be my first choice for a setting--I think it woudl be fabulous with an asscher instead of a round.

atalanta, I really like your preferences (I have similar tastes). The setting you posted is very nice.

The dimend scaasi setting is pretty. I almost went with it for my sapphire but was going to have them channel set the side stones for an even sleeker, simpler look. Instead I''m having a setting made that''s based on a Jeff Cooper design (R-3101), with channel set tapered baguettes and squares. You might want to check out some of his designs, they''re simpler and not frilly.

I failed the first time I tried to upload multiple picks but I''ll try again.

I posted the one with just the baguettes.

I am definitely looking for something with flow...i.e. no prongs that stick out too much, diamond not too high above the band. I don''t know if that''s possible. I like the side stones and I also like an x-prong, I think.

Like I said, simple is good. I just don''t know which design is better.

Ok...I attached the traps with the baguettes. I''m worried this is too busy a look (for me). I can''t attach more than one but I will reply again and see what I can do.

Thanks everyone for your help! This is wonderful!

that asscher with the side traps is pretty much the exact picture I would have posted. So...anyone care to weigh in? Preferences? What will look better? Suggestions?

I didn't realize how much time this would take (or how much I could get into it!)

cheers

p.s. I love the look of the baguettes on my finger with the stone. i have not seen traps on my hand yet. And I don't know if both would be too much.

atalanta,

the second pic you posted is marvellous :)

the setting is beautiful and classic.

hope you do go with that one, its one of the best ring settings for an asscher IMO.

I prefer the second one too, but like I said, it''s really all personal preference. Get what you love!

Thanks for weighing in!

Just for the full comparison, here''s the third option. Traps, no baguettes.

This is fun! (it''s been exciting but some of the fun had gone out of it so thank you!!)

I like that one ok, but I still prefer the middle one best personally. I think it flows the best.

Thanks everyone! You are all so helpful.

We ''visited'' the diamond yesterday and I''m really pleased. it''s so pretty. Now just working on the setting. The guy I am working with is wonderful, he and his partner are going to draw up a number of options based on all the info we gave them (ALL the info...I tend to over-research everything!)

Alas, the traps are beyond our budget. It''s just not going to work. The jeweler suggested we go with two baguettes side by side, one smaller than the other, to get the same effect. I don''t know if that will work but am willing to try!

We get the sketches tomorrow and I''ll post them for opinions if I get a chance.

Hope everyone is having a beautiful weekend.

Cheers!

I can''t quite picture this.... But I''m glad you love your stone, and seem pleased with the jewelers, that''s big! Please let us know how it goes.

I like them all. They are very classic for an asscher. And gorgeous. Truly. And I looked at either those exact settings or something very similar for my own reset.

One thing though. My stone (asscher) is a 5.87 x 5.86... your is likely to be 5.5 square. When I tried the settings on my hand with similar sized centers I was really not happy with what I saw. Personally. So please go out and try on the settings you are thinking about.

As for the center stone. What I did is buy some cheap crystal studs that were asscher cut (you can find them a few stores carry them, I think I got mine from ann taylor) and took the stone out, and carried it around with me when setting shopping (because most stores just don''t have asschers in the right size lying about). I''d drop the little crystal stone into the setting then try the setting on. It REALLY helped me figure out what I wanted on my hand.

Here''s a setting for you to consider. It is one I think would look lovely with a stone your size as the center. You can ask for the no milgrain. It would really highlight your center stone and make it the star, and still give you step cut bling

Here is one design that has two baguettes on each side ... I loved this ring in my search but wasn''t sure if it would look as great with a smaller center stone (this one is 2.2 ish)

LOVE that new Leon that Gypsy posted -- that could be a great option. Iwannaprettyone has a wonderful engraved setting with a ton of "flow" & would look good with an asscher.

Wow. Gypsy, that setting is gorgeous! I''m curious what you ended up going with and if you can articulate what it was about those settings that didn''t work. You''re almost bang on on the size of my stone. I really don''t like things too big but I want it to look right on my hand.

Thanks for the engraving idea too Deco. Another thing to play with. If only I was remotely good at making decisions!

I was thinking I might stick with the simple tapered baguettes although now that I have seen that setting with the french cut side stones (I don''t even really know what those are...besides gorgeous!) I might be swayed...especially because it has everything else I wanted, the x-prong and the double claws.

How does one even make these decisions? Just get two rings?
