Well I finally got my hands on a stone that gives me the finger coverage I so crave . It is a 15 x 10 x 9 concave cut tourmaline from Richard Homer

But I have no clue how to set it. Will you giant gem gals chime in?

The stone has a modern cut so traditional side stones seem incongruous. But I would like a little bling.

Without further ado here are my really bad no good photos, long story but I could only take photos inside and with my least flattering lighting.

Cute little stone butt. Actually big ole belly.

Ok this is resting in a setting so it is super high but best I could do.

As much as I love EW, NW seems to complement your finger/hand better.

That stone is pretty spectacular as is, it hardly needs any additional enhancement. I actually really like your simple N-S temporary setting. :)

What a beautiful stone and gorgeous cut. Both ways look lovely but bear in mind if you go EW you have to factor in metal and shank - looking at the size against your finger I think it would be too wide. I'm a NS girl anyway so happy to suggest that!

N-S looks better for me too.

If it was mine, I would put it in a metal halo.

Look forward to seeing the finished ring!

Thank you all. It is a great stone and my phone wasn't capturing it at all. You get lost in those concave lines...you are getting sleepy. Very sleepy.

Concerns with plain prong setting is the edges of the girdle get scratched or bumped. I sort of feel like it needs a little frame, not that it isn’t spectacular but I'm really pink so something to break that up and dress it up.

A few more just to gauge size. I can accommodate 18mm East West and this is 15mm. 20201120_134650.jpg

+1 N/S.

It's a beautiful looking stone! I really like it on the temp setting you're resting it on. It suits your hand!

I was a solid north south until I saw your setting ideas, the vertices on the east easy setting make it really balanced and appealing. I also think the tiny pave goes well with the modern cut. You have wonderful design sense, congratulations on a beautiful stone!

One day, I shall have a ringdant, and have a stone in mind already!

Thank you so much. I do dig that setting but I'm not sure who does pave like that. I wish I could have it convertible so I could wear it either way. Too many options!

Any custom jeweler can do the pave in all the designs you posted. Very exciting!

Why not? The stone is definitely big enough for a ringdant!

Whatever you decide, I would set it lower to the finger and in a protective setting, but not a bezel. It’s a large stone, and can easily get knocked on things. Tourmaline, in my experience, can be “chippy.”

Noting the high crown, the prongs must be longer, and double prongs are probably a must.

Lovely gem, looking forward to how you set it.

When I said that I was concerned about the measurements if set EW, I meant the EW measurement of stone and setting. On your hand it looked like the stone nearly covered your finger. Add in metal and it "might" hang over each side of the finger. It looks like it will be 18mm from side to side.

Ha you and me both. I'm trying to find that balance between protecting the sides and letting the cut shine. I didn't think of prong length, thank you, that is a really good point.

@LD you make a good point. I have no idea how much metal it is gonna take and I need room to protect it so to speak.
Trying to get a gauge on size I fooled around with some yellow tack-be forewarned the stone is not this weird color!

I must say after playing with it it doesn't seem too big at all, whatever was I worried about? :)

Another +1 for the N-S camp and no, 15mm isn't big for many.

You have ample finger estate. It's addictive. Once you wear 15mm regularly, 18 and 20mm don't seem that far off ;-)

Pave is simple. I've had 0.003ct pave before and they are still holding up!

Looking forward to viewing the end project. That cut is golly gorgeous!

15mm is also a nice size for a ringdant! Personally, the cost for a convertible quoted to me as standard is around US$200 atop that for a ring, mostly for the increase in gold weight and perhaps a tad more workmanship fee.

+1 to ringdant, +1 to N-S. It does look too wide to accommodate additional bling that could face up (perpendicular diamonds are possible) if set E-W. N-S would give you a lot space for bling on the sides. It wouldn't look too big if set N-S with bling. E-W with bling, I'm afraid the ring would be wearing you instead.

Your new gem is beautiful and I do love your design ideas! +1 for N/S but what if you used your second photoshop idea and rotated the stone to N/S with the same beautiful pointed frame? It would elongate the look even more and IMHO be very elegant ❤️
